Lexar Firewire 800 cf card reader - Nikon D3 file corruption

->> First off - I have searched the msg boards and also googled this topic and haven't found a satisfactory answer to my problem....
I recently purchased a Lexar Pro Firewire 800 CF Card Reader which I use on an 8 core MacPro tower running 10.5.6. and I use 133x and 300x speed 8 GB - Lexar Pro CF Cards in Nikon D3's.
I ingest via Photo Mechanic - and in the past have never had an issue with file corruption.
But since I started using the Lexar Firewire 800 cf card reader - I always have a couple of corrupted files on import. And when I go back to the CF card and re-copy (via the Finder) the corrupted files - they are always good. So, logic leads me to believe the file corruption is happening during the import phase.
I have seen a few mentions of this on the net - but no clear answer to what the problem might be and how to correct it. Anyone here have a clue to what my problem might be? |

->> My first suggestion would be to use Image Capture or other importing program to see if it is an issue with Photo Mechanic or not.
Next-Try to nail down if it is: a computer or cable issue, the card reader or the CF cards themselves. Also update to 10.5.7 and repair permissions.
Go back and try using the cards with another card reader too. |

->> I had the same issue with a Sandinsk USB Reader!!
But in my case, the files on the card got corrupted too!!
Thank God, this happened on a studio shoot and I reshot immediately!!
My reader was KAKA!! I went to Best Buy and purchased a new reader and everything was good!

->> MacBook Pro 17, Lexar FW800 Reader, Lexar 4GB and 8GB 300x cards, OS X 10.5.7... I use Finder to copy over files from my D3, no issues here... I've had the FW800 reader since they almost first came out.
Also no issues on my PowerMac G5 1.8GHz running OS X 10.4.11
I'd think it would have more to do with the program you use then the card and reader... |

->> I've had occasional problems with corrupted files on import with PhotoMechanic - regardless of card, reader, or platform (although all mine have been Windows). A very quick re-import always solves the problem; I've never lost a file.
Lightroom and even Picasa have never had this problem, even importing the same images from the same card. |

->> Jock,
I had a similar problem copying files from a Lexar FW400 reader to a G-Tech drive that was USB/FW400 but plugged into the USB port on my MacBook, using Adobe's Photo Downloader that was a part of CS3.
When I used a In troubleshooting it, I found that importing with the Lexar reader to my internal drive was fine and using a USB reader (the little SanDisk Extreme CF/SD USB reader) to the same G-Tech drive plugged into the FW port on the Mac was fine.
It was just that combo of that FW400 reader to that hard drive using the USB port. I'm not sure what the moral of the story is, but the fix was to quit using that combination of hardware to download photos on the road.

| ->> FYI - I think I have narrowed the problem down to a bad firewire cable. |

->> I used to have the same problem, before I started buying the pro cards (and before the pro cards plummeted in price). Since I upgraded my memory cards, I haven't had a problem. Same cable (well, it's an "aftermarket"—I needed a 9 pin to 6 pin) as I've been using since I've had the reader, about 18 months. So in my case, the problem was the card, and even then usually just one of my cards.
Just you know, food for thought on what could be the actual problem. |
