->> Microstock photography is a very polarizing issue, as we all know. The debates, arguments, and online bashing of microstock shooters is old hat by now, so I'll skip a summary of all that here.
Meanwhile, at least several times a year, some mainstream media piece surfaces such as USA Today's piece in March, or Good Morning America's piece yesterday suggesting that microstock is a good way to convert your hobby into an additional revenue stream, and the circle starts all over again.
I invited istockphoto shooter Rich Legg onto my new podcast series to have an honest discussion about the myths, misconceptions, and public perception of microstock. Rich is a fulltime microstock shooter, and he has a serious business plan. He shoots with high-end gear, and has carved out a niche for himself to make a viable income one small download at a time.

You may not agree with much of the microstock model, but listening to Rich Legg's business approach and philosophy is quite interesting.
As a journalist, I chose to host this conversation because I felt that so much of the web chatter on the subject was polarized, sensationalized, and propagandized by one side or the other. Even if you don't agree with the microstock model after listening to Legg explain his approach, I think there is much to be learned about running a photography business of any flavor or market niche from this pro shooter. |
