->> I have created a product/process (Electric Cell) that processes JPGs from a camera and makes them available to any wi-fi capable cell phones with a browser. All in real time. The target user is the solitary photographer at any sports event, most likely youth, selling images.
I am looking for some beta users. And any comments.
The product/process is copyrighted. Electric Cell requires MAC OS X 10.4 +, and Adobe Photoshop Elements 6+. The current version does not interface with Adobe Photoshop CS any. The current version does not interface with LightRoom, because the AppleScript dictionary is not robust enough. There is no Windows version, because there is no Windows AppleScript.

->> About 100 of you downloaded Electric Cell V1.5. Electric Cell V1.6 is now availalble. New features:
For the wi-fi (cell phone) customer:
1. Start review of images at beginning, current middle, or current last image. As you photograph and transfer "current" moves.
2. The customer can mark moments where they want to start reviewing. For example their child steps up to bat.
For the photographer:
1. User preferences interface enhanced.
There is a trial version.
The Canon 1D Mark IV can transfer to wi-fi as well, BUT the images are not watermarked as is done with Electric Cell.

Recently added is an Interacive Demo, which gives you a feel for the wi-fi (cell phone) customer experience while you photograph.
FYI. I ran my original post by the webmaster and he/she was okay with it. |

->> This is a very cool idea. However, I wonder about the real world usefulness of this process?
I recently shot a gymnastics event where the event organizers were posting scores real-time via wifi for use on smart phones and laptops at the event. They announced this wifi feature every hour or so.
After 2 long days of shooting, I thought this was a fantastic idea. So I asked the tech if he had an estimate on how many people were using the technology, and he told me he was only aware of a few.
To make it useful to the customer (and beyond just a gee whiz), you would need to have customers that have a carrier that allows use of wifi (Sprint disables it on their phones), have wifi enabled phones, and know how to use wifi. I use my wife as a Blackberry poweruser, smart phone study example, and when I asked her if she would know how, she gave me that blank 'techno' stare. I told her you would just need to bring up your browser at such an event, and she asked why would I want to be looking at my phone when watching a game? Doooooh!
Unless you are passing out wifi devices for use at events, how do you envision justifying this layer of technology at an otherwise very busy event? I've shot a lot of events over the years (not so much any more), and would like to be sold on it. But at an event, time is money, and extra hassles can be costly if they take extra time, with little or no return.
I am not arguing against this technology. I'm just asking if you know how many people would really use this at an event? Have shot events when this has helped increase sales? Or if you are using it in a different manner, in which case I'd love to know more details? |

| ->> A colleague who has seen Electric Cell in action, believes that it may work in a league environment. Especially if there is revenue for the league. The league has the email list and sends out messages to all parents/participants. In the message could be notification that during the season several games will be photographed with wi-fi capability. The message could explain how to connect. For each print sold, the league gets $0.10. The league gets something. Over time, the number of devices that are wi-fi capable in the audience will increase. Cell phones are going to be cheaper, more prevalent and more functionality. If not wi-fi capable then "another network." Electric Cell just needs a tweak to access the "another network." |
