Keeping files at 1-3MB on Export (Lightroom or PhotoMechanic

->> One thing I still struggle with in the workflow is an easy/fast way to export files from either Lightroom or PhotoMechanic to keep files under the 3MB size.
Seems pretty simple, but I haven't found any scripts/plugins/settings to do this easily.
So I tag/caption/crop my selected photos from an event, and then export them @300 dpi, but of course the filesizes are all over the board and they need to be between 1-3MB.
Photomechanic is nice since if shows you the filesize based on the JPG compression you're set on, but when you doing a bunch of files, there's no way to do this in a batch...at least that I've found.
Also the shots that aren't cropped much or at all, it seems like you have to dial that JPG compression down so far, that I'm going to be loosing some good quality (40-50% compression).
Thoughts? Thanks! |

->> When you export in LR, you can choose to down size it so that the long side of the picture is XXXX pixels.
If you want a 3MP pic, tell it to resize each pic so the long edge is 2100 pixels. That will make pics just shy of 3MP. |

->> In PM, do essentially the same thing. Tell it to "save as" and set the "box size". You can move the compression slider, and it will give you a read-out of the approximate file size (below the slider).
Be sure you don't confuse pixel dimensions with file sizes. In Thomas's example, the file would yield a 5x7 print at 300 dpi, but without compression would be about 9 MB (if I'm doing my math right). |

->> Thanks Thomas, I tried this with some existing images and I think that will do the trick! Very cool...I didn't even stop to think about doing the math. I'll give it a shot tonight at the Royals game!
Dave-Using the PM compression slider is what I had been doing, but that obviously is on a per image basis, not a group.
Thanks guys for the feedback, I'll let you know how it goes after tonight when I put it to the test. :-) |

->> Maybe I didn't understand your question. I batch save all the time. Obviously, all files will not be the exact same size, but they're close because you're applying the same amount of compression to all of them.
Highlight some or all of the files you have open in PM. You then set a "fit in box" parameter similar to the "long side dimension" Thomas refers to. Finally, select or create a destination folder. |
