Any recourse with a canon lemon?

->> Does Canon has any lemon replacement/return camera policy or does anyone have any idea who I can shake down/up at Canon?
I made what I now consider a mistake of purchasing a 1d (iii) when it came out.
On 06/08 the camera had an err 99 that required sending the camera back for service.
On 11/08 the camera had an err 99 that required sending the camera back for service.
On 05/09 the camera had an err 99 that required sending the camera back for service.
Each time the error message did not clear no matter what (change/remove lens, battery, cards).
I presume in October or November of this year I will have to send it in again.
The camera gets normal use in un-extreme conditions (Western Washington, where the weather is pretty gentle), and doesn’t get tossed about or dropped.
Anyone have any suggestions besides shedding myself of all my canon equipment? |

->> I don't know about the state of Washington, but the federal lemon law is the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Beyond that, you'll have to Google "lemon laws in Washington state" to get more info.
As I understand it, if a product has had success repairs for the same malfunction during the warranty period, it qualifies as a "lemon" and you have redress avenues. But beyond that you'll have to see what Washington state provides in the way of specifics. |

->> Thanks Phil, I'll look into local laws and see if I can hit Canon with them. |

->> Stupid question alert.....
Have you just plain asked Canon to replace the body? I had a D2X that went in for 4 blown/bad AF units. On the 4th trip I asked for them to consider letting me keep the NPS loaner that I had in exchange for the D2X that I had sent in 4 times. Three days later I had a NEW D2Xs (upgraded) boxed with all the goodies and an email telling me NOT to return the D2X accessories.
So again have you just plain asked? And have you asked the RIGHT people? I don't have any Canon contacts but I'm sure that there are members here who can put you in touch with helping hands. |

->> The 2nd time I had it fixed I asked the people I was dealing with at the repair center if I could just get it replaced, as I was already unhappy sending it back twice after owning it less then a year.
The dealer said it's Canon's business.
I'll Check with Mike Gurley too, thank you Steven. |

->> I have a contact at Canon in New York...let me know if you need it. What I did, finally, was write directly to the CEO of Canon, with a copy to a number of other executives...got a response within a day or two. It took another two months to get everything finally resolved, though. |

->> Mike Gurley the canon rep seemed like a nice guy who did what was within his power for me.
I’ll give him good marks for customer service (A loaner, a new and better mirror fix, and a promise that this time for sure the err99 will be fixed for good.). As to the quality of the 1D I’ll have to wait six months and see if it is still working.
Thanks to Mike and Steven for suggesting that avenue. |
