Nikon AF-S 300mm 2.8 hood dimensions

| ->> We have a Nikon ED AF-S NIKKOR 300mm 2.8 D lens here at work with no hood. I believe that it takes the "HK-22". I know some local fabricators that could make one out of aluminum and save us $300 on a "HK-26". I'm not even sure if that will fit. I'd like them to get it right the first try so I was wondering if someone could measure one for me and post the dimensions. Thanks! |

| ->> You might want to wait. There is a company about to introduce a cool new product that might take care of your problem. |

| ->> Waiting works, I usually just use the 400 we have that still has the hood. Any idea when this mystery product will surface? |

| ->> How about a 4" pipe coupling? I know a 6" one fits the Canon 400 f2.8 perfectly |

| ->> I have seen some use coffee cans, for 400mm 2.8 they fit perfect. they cover them with a material and they work great. I borrowed and shot a 400mm 2.8 and the entire time did not know the lens hood was a coffee can, until i took the lens back. images were great no issues. |

->> Regular or decaf? If you shoot too many frames do you get the jitters?
I'll have to check that out sometime and on the bright side the lid will make a great lens cap. |

| ->> Mine has the hood, but I'd really like to have a hood extension that you can slide out when you need it. |

->> As JC said, you can get a 4 inch pipe coupling at Lowes for about $5 that will work. The inside diameter is a little too small. I managed to take a utility knife and shave a 1/2 inch wide strip half the thickness of the rubber. This will allow it to slide over the rubber ring around the front of the lense. If you take the rubber ring off, you don't need to trim the pipe coupling.
It works really well even through it is a couple inches shorter than the original. The down side is that it will not slide over the lens like the original for storage in the case. However, it is cheap enough that you can make several and store them in the car. They are also softer so if you bump someone with it it won't be as rigid.
That said the HK-22 is carbon fiber and the outside diameter may have to change if you go to aluminum or other metal. Also don't forget that you want to blacken the inside, the original had felt glued to it.
The dimensions of the are as follows:
Ouside Diameter 5.2 inch
Inside Diameter 5.05 inch
Length 6 inch
there are 6 posts around the mounting end 7/32 in diameter at equidistant points on a line 3/8 in from the one end.
5 are 1/8 inch high and 1 is 1/4 in high.
A set screw is set between 2 posts opposite the longer one and extends 5/16 inside. |

->> Robert,
Who is rolling out an alternative product? |

| ->> Awesome, thanks a ton John! I'll run it by the fabricators and see what they think. One of the factors is the Think Tank Hydrophobia we just got. I want to make sure everything is secure if the rain cover is wrapped and hanging on it. Thanks again for the measurements! |

->> Robert, add me to that list to be notified when that "cool new product" made for a NIKKOR 300mm 2.8 AF-S when it comes out!
We're still talking about a hood for a Nikon 300 2.8, right?
BTW - Why does that Nikon hood cost over $300? |

This may be just what I was looking for. Half the price is also nice.
FYI - If you look, there is also one for the 300 2.8 |

Robert, I'm assuming this isn't what you were talking about. Is there a time frame for what you were talking about? |

->> The guys at GriffGear seem to do a similiar product: http://www.griffgear.com/pages/lenshood.htm
I've purchased rain covers and laptop shields from them in the past and can vouch for their quality. Everything is hand made by Rob and shipped from Australia. |

->> I spoke to Aqua Tech this morning. Apparently they have experienced some manufacturing delays, and they expect the hood to be available in about a month or so.
The collapsing aspect of the hood is that it collapses into a flat, rectangular shape (which should fit easily inside the lid of rolling bags). As it was described to me, the hood is made of a jacket-like material with ribbing to give it structure. Supposedly, the hood itself is sufficiently rigid to permit you to stand the lens on the hood while attached. The hood uses velcro, some internal ribbing and neoprene to hold on to the lens. |

| ->> You can contact a store that sells Telescopes and get a dew shield which will run less than $25 and wrap it around the front of the lens. I use one of the to keep rain mist off the lens when shooting in bad weather. |
