Removing the LCD cover on the D3

->> Okay so the warranty on the D3 has expired and I want to do this myself as it isn't a big enough problem to warrant a trip to NPS. I need to remove the LCD cover from the back of the camera to clean off a haze that has been there from day 1. Has anyone had to replace a cracked cover on thier D3 that can advise me on whether this is just being held on with double stick tape? I've seen both the pry and remove and the suction cup tool used to remove other covers. Just looking for any first hand experiences.

->> Eric,

I recently had the LCD monitor glass on my D2x shatter. So I had a chance to see how it goes together. The glass is held on by black double sided tape. The glass fits into a recess so it’s flush on the outside. The LCD screen is further recessed behind the glass and is completely separate from the glass.

I pulled the glass shards off of the camera with needle nose pliers. All the pieces came off cleanly but it seemed like the tape did a pretty good job of sticking the glass to the camera. If you want to pry the glass out, I would recommend trying a dental pick and working very carefully along one edge.

If you break the glass while trying to remove it, it’s not the end of the world. You might try sourcing a new piece of glass directly from Nikon and install it yourself.

Worst case, send it to NPS or some other shop. In my case I sent my D2x to Authorized Photo Service and they charged me $150 to replace the glass as part of their standard service. Their service also included adjustment of focus and shutter speed plus cleaning the CCD and checking the metering, bayonet mount, circuit boards and etc. My camera was in and out in one day.
