Pocket Wizard TT1 and TT5

->> I was wondering if anyone on here has had hands on experience with the TT1 and TT5 yet? I'm debating between getting some Plus II's (I've used them many times before, no problems) or spending a few extra bucks for the TT1 and TT5.

I've heard all the complaints about the limited range, all I'm looking to use it for is gyms, and portraits, nothing long-range.

Just curous.

->> Andrew,

I have both TT1's and TT5's and love them. I run two TT5's on a Brewer bracket with 580 ex's with no problem. I really have not tested maximum range on them....I have used them out to about 50 feet without any problems. I have also tested them at 1/8000 second with Photogenics and they did sync as advertised. I would definately recommend them over Radiopoppers (I have had a set of those also). If you want TTL, Pocketwizards are the way to go. If you just want to fire a manual flash unit, the Plus II's are the way to go as far as price.

->> Thought I would give them a chance and got mine yesterday. I think mine are totally defective or I have no clue how to use them. My TT1 changes my camera's exposure and doesn't seem to want to fire the flash most of the time. When it does flash the flash on my TT5 dumps full power. So far not very happy.

Waiting to hear back from tech support before I send them back.

->> Have a few more easy questions here.

1.Will a 550EX work with ETTL on these, or only 580's and newer?

2. Is there a way to use ratios on these without a flash or ST-E2 on the camera?

->> Andrew- I believe there's no way around having the ST-E2 or flash on camera for ratios.

I have 3 FlexTT5s. Not too impressed with range and reliability with it mounted on the units mounted directly to the flash. Using an ETTL off shoe cord greatly improves it though. I'll have to play around with mounting and antenna positions some more.

One of my units had the test/learn button become stuck, sent it in to Pocket Wizard earlier this week for warranty repair.

->> Khai. Why not use at 580 on camera with the mini? If I'm not wrong that will give you ratios.

->> I recently switched to Nikon (but thats another thread....)

If I recall correctly, the newer Canon's have the ability to control all the flash settings via the camera body on the back LCD now don't they ? I know you can set the custom functions like that but I'm pretty sure I was able to adjust the ratio's on the LCD with the jog wheel. I know you can do that with Nikon now.

Unless maybe that doesn't work unless you also have a speedlight or ST-E2 physically in the hotshoe to make that function work.

That would be a real shame as I'm really intrested in this system for the ability to put a couple of remote ETTL/iTTL speedlights up and not have to worry about line of sight or distance issues using the IR method of triggering.

I don't have the SU-800, which is the Nikon version of the ST-E2 and was hoping to avoid buying it if I can control each lights output via the camera.
