"A potentially key witness to a killing last month in San Francisco - a college journalism student - is invoking a state law aimed at protecting working journalists' sources and unpublished material in refusing to cooperate with police......The San Francisco State student...had been following the 21-year-old Bennett for several months as part of his senior project in photojournalism."

->> It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. An interesting case. I can see both sides of the argument. Hopefully the courts and lawyers can work this out so the students rights are protected AND justice is done for the victim's family. I realize the concept of a win-win scenario is foreign to a lot of people in the legal systm but hopefully it can happen.

->> Unless I agreed with someone to protect their identity or information in exchange for what they let me know, I don't think I'd invoke the shield law. Maybe I'm not looking at this the right way?

->> The Shield Law is designed to keep journalists from becoming de-facto police investigators, so I think there is a difference between being forced to give up sources, notes, or images and CHOOSING to do so, whether for a publication or a contest. But I can see why people might see it as ironic.

->> Luke, that article is dated 19 May 2009 and does not fully reflect the current state of this situation, which is that these images that were being invoked under the shield law were entered by Welsh in the 2009 CPOY:
