Does anyone know how to get it to open on a PC? |

| ->> Rich-it opens in ITunes on the MAC. I saved it to Quicktime (by accident-not sure how I did it but I can't get it to work again) It comes out to be 5.6 GB which is too large for a DVD-when I tried to compress it, it was then either too small, or still at 5.6 GB |

->> Rich,
can you move to NYC so I can come over everytime I have a technical issue (which is often :)
Do you seem to lose quality when saving this way? The image seems to have a lot more noise when I saved it this way-with .avi at the end |

->> Hi Deb:
I would love to live in NYC, let me know if you make it out to the left coast.
Perhaps we should backtrack a bit. What do you want to do with the video on your PC- view, edit...? Did you also know that they make 9 gig dvds?
Your best bet might be to go back to the original project in iMovie and Choose "Share" from within iMovie and select Export Movie. Are you using iLife '09?
Best of luck!

->> HI Rich,
My husband and I were shooting a sports hall of fame dinner the other night. There was a very prominent man who recently passed away and they asked us if we could videotape 4 of the speeches about him to give to his family who couldn't make the ceremony. I videotaped it, edited it and all they want is to have it on a DVD to play at home. When it opens in ITunes, it looks great. When I saved it to an .avi format, it doesn't look so great. I am not sure if the family has a MAC so I don't want to just save it in ITunes and I think it would be impossible to find out what the family uses. I would also love if they could play this on their tv.
And I had no idea they made 9 GB DVD's...thanks for that info |

| ->> oh one more thing--I have Final Cut Express but for the life of me I can't figure it out. I did the initial edit in IMovie, then somehow opened it in FCE-so I have it saved in both ITunes and FCE (as well as Quick time) It looks best in Itunes, to be honest |

->> Debra,
Since you're on a mac, another option is to open iDVD, place your m4v video file in a project there, and burn it to a DVD that'll play on a DVD player, which is what the family wanted, right?

Will it also work on any DVD player?

->> deb, that seems about normal to "render" the video. it is irritating...I shot about 6 minutes of footage with my Markll5D the other day and it took 40 minutes for it to
upload into Imovie....as far as the movie not looking great when converted to the avi file it might be your compression settings are off....I always try and save at the highest quality setting, which does take forever and makes huge files but it does look as good as the original. |

->> Okay Deb.
Now we got it all figured out. Yes, in iMovie you want to click Share>iDVD. That will send the movie to iDVD and present you withl a bunch of options for layout and such. It can be quite daunting. In this case Keep it Simple. Remember, after you burn your first DVD, it asks you if you want to burn another, click yes. Especially if you do not have two DVD drives and software like Toast to burn duplicates. Otherwise, it will have to re-render the entire project again next time you want to burn another disc. The is an option to save the project as a disc image, but that is like storing the whole disc on your hard drive.

->> Debra,
The DVD that comes out of iDVD is designed to play on any DVD player. You may run into an older player that may give you trouble, but in my experience it works on 99% of the players I've tried.

->> Are you using iMovie '09? If not, look for a button somewhere that says something like Send to iDVD. Otherwise, find the movie file you had with the .m4v and open iDVD and add it by drag and dropping it into the project there.
I think a quick lesson at the Apple Store would help you a lot. ;-)

->> Debra,
To make a DVD from an iMovie movie, you start in iDVD and then locate the movie from within the iDVD application. It's the little blue icon that looks like a DVD with some black and white diagonal stripes on top.
Here's some good tutorials that tell you what you need to know in less than 5 mintues:
http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials
Try the ones called "magic dvd" (shortcut method with fewer options) and "custom dvd (more options and a few more steps)."
Once you create your first DVD, you'll be surprised that you ever thought it was complicated -- trust me. This is alot easier than it seems at the outset.
It's very kind of you to do this project and I'm sure the family will appreciate it.

They also make this one:
http://tinyurl.com/rbcqws
which is an upgrade (but not in stock at B&H or Elgato), it's billed as "a more powerful and more expensive version called Turbo.264 HD "
http://www.ilounge.com/assets/images/reviews_elgato/turbo264hd/4.jpg
Here us a review of the newer and older products (264 vs 264 HD)
Basically, for hi hes files (1080p), the 264HD kicks butt....but read it for yourself. |
