->> Hey all,
Has anyone shot at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Kentucky lately and if so, do you have any more info on the track than is currently in the Sportsshooter Guide ?
I'll be shooting my first NASCAR/Truck Series there this summer and safety is my top concern along with getting some great images after that. |

->> First off they're not going to let you do anything really dangerous. That being said, motorsports shooting can be dangerous. Spins and crashes can happen at any moment so always be aware of what is going on around you, and try not to turn your back towards oncoming traffic. Be polite to the race crews when trying to shoot their pit stops and try not to get in the way. Don't be afraid to ask questions in the photog meeting. They will usually go over the shooting spots and how to get there. Talk to the track photog, most of the ones i've met are more than willing to give tips to new shooters.
Bring walking shoes and ear protection. Sunscreen doesn't hurt either. |

->> Jim I shoot at Kentucky every year. I'm getting read to head down there next month for the Nationwide Series race.
The Speedway is a very easy place to work and the staff is great. That said its never a bad idea to ask the track photographer questions. Kentucky has everything clearly marked. There are maps in the media center and clearly marked camera holes.
You'll end up doing allot of walking. The tunnel in and out of the track infield is in turn 3 where the easiest spot to get "inside" the fence is. The track has what we call a moat between the stands and the fence that makes shooting there nice.
Like Steve said ear protection and Sunscreen are a must. While they race at night they practice during the day and it gets hot there in July. |
