->> Service Notice: EOS-1D Mark III/EOS-1Ds Mark III: Oil Spots on LPF Surface

Thank you for using Canon products.

We have discovered that images taken by some EOS-1D Mark III and EOS-1Ds Mark III digital SLR cameras may exhibit ring-shaped spots. We would like to convey the details and our service policy.

We offer our most sincere apologies to customers using these products who have been inconvenienced by this issue. Going forward, we will spare no effort in our quality management to make sure our customers can use our products with confidence. We hope our efforts will earn your understanding.

I don't know how you could be more disappointed in a piece of equipment that photographers depend on everyday. I'm glad people feel "lucky" that they bought and received the cameras that work.

->> Hey Chuck, sorry that wasn't meant to be directed negatively at you or anyone else. It was directed at Canon. I just meant that when you buy a camera at that price and a camera made for the pro market, you shouldn't have to be lucky to get one that works.

There is obviously something bad going on with Canon manufacturing, because this is not the only camera they have produced that has had problems.

It has to be better than all the bad publicity from this joke, that is tarnishing Canon's stellar reputation over all these years. Is it really worth it to Canon just because a small percentage seem to have no problems?

->> Its funny, how 10 years can change. That was when Nikon sucked the big one and had several issues with its N90 and the speedlights? The SB28 broke its foot about once a month just by the camera banging against my hip when I walked and had the flash attached. NPS was so smarthy, I couldn't wait to switch.

Give them time, they will do it again. And then Canon, when they eat crow and get things in order...will do it again.

Its a vicious circle.

They've cleaned up their act since then, and the D3 is a fabulous camera. But those were some bad ol' days...and it wasn't that long ago.

Probably the same reason people who don't own a particular camera feel the need to "attack" it.

"reminds me of a bunch of fourth graders."
absolutely agree. It would be very interesting how many posts about camera X's superiority or shortcomings were left if you stripped out all the noise from people that have never used camera X in a real world scenario.

->> Personally Louis, there is little psychology that needs to be applied. I used to be an editor reviewing products and testing them out for digitalFOTO magazine. As a result, I worked first hand in finding out what worked and what didn't in these cameras. I spoke with R&D department heads and got to feel out what they thought and what the driving force was for their reasons for certain additions and subtractions to the latest and greatest competition buster they came out with.

I don't "defend" Canon blindly, nor do I defend Nikon. If truth be known, the best operating camera in my abusive past was my first camera: my Pentax K1000! That camera never broke, or fell short for me ( I even used it to hammer in a nail for setting a backdrop in high school, try that with a 1D Mk III!).
But I do know, having spent a few years interviewing Canon and Nikon R&D people, that for as much praise they deserve, there has been some overabundance of hubris that could use a trouncing. Some products head out the door full of bells and whistles, but devoid of solid and consistent tools that pros really need.

There is a stink of "good enough until the next evolution" that is tiresome. Sure, its great that Canon redeveloped autofocus, but it tripped and fell. Not acceptable. Nikon? You've come along way from trips in flash and body development in the last stages of film, although the D2 incarnations were pitiful, things seem good lately.

I nitpick because I know Nikon and Canon read these sites. And I am comfortable with them knowing how I feel about them; both good and bad. I rode them as a editor to squeeze out better products, and won't stop, because its our praise and cross burning that hopefully keeps them from getting lax.

As long as we don't accept mediocre offerings, and demand better, might we not, occasionally, get something to be happy with? Its seems that Nikon responded to magazine ads full of white lenses, and dropping pro revenue by putting the nose to the grindstone, and that is significant to me, when years ago, their then head of R&D in the US stated to me that pros only account for 7% percent of their sales, and aren't priority to their bottom line (Spring of 2001 at Comdex) but I think Nikon figured out that even if pro cameras aren't the majority of their sales, opposition ads overshadowing can possibly have an effect in their scientific and consumer sales overall.

So yes, I pick on both lines. Doing my small, insignificant part to keep them honest, but until RED comes out with product that replaces everything I need Nikon AND Canon for, I continue to shoot with BOTH.
