Pre Release cable help
Russell Rinn, Photographer
Georgetown | Tx | USA | Posted: 11:57 PM on 05.12.09
->> I bought a pre release cable to use on a remote and my understanding was that when the switch was 'on' it should function as if the shutter button was pressed halfway, ie. it should focus. This is not happening. The remote fires properly, but the camera is not focusing. Is my information incorrect and it will not focus? Do any settings need to change in the camera?

Thanks

->> Most times a remote camera's focus is pre-set manually to hit a certain point when the camera is being rigged, then the focus (and zoom, if applicable) rings are taped down so that things don't move.

What are you trying to accomplish by needing the remote camera to constantly auto-focus?

->> Thanks Guy. I agree about the focus preset for remotes. I was just testing the cable out. Others who have used it have said it will constantly try to acquire focus and I was curious why mine wasn't.

->> The camera has to be set to front button AF for this to work. If you're a Canon guy go to custom function #4 and set it to 0. This will make the AF engage when using the pre-release cable.

->> Thanks Justin. I had wondered about that. I have to reassign that function when I use the cabled release and hadn't had time to reassign.

Thank you.
