->> I have never sold a story to a publication and I would like to know if anyone has any tips. I am going to the International Beard and Mustache competition up in Anchorage. I am actually taking a week long cruise up to Alaska with numerous members of Team Beard USA and I will have amazing access to their daily lives. The trip will end with the 2009 International competition. It could be a very fun and funny story. Like I said I have never sold anything to a publication. First does anyone have a suggestion on who might be interested in it and second what is the best way to go about selling the story.
I am not a writer, so am hoping to put together a photostory with long captions.
Any help would be great. |

->> Dan,
I would strongly suggest you get the 2009 edition of Photographers Market guide. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/2009-Photographers-Market/Poehner/e/978158...
There is a magazine or newsletter or publication out there for just about everything. It lists hundreds of mags newspapers, book publishers, agents, museums, etc including specs and contact names and where and how to contribute. I've sold a few stories that way. |

->> Dan:
You might find out where the team members are from, then check media in their area to see if they would be interested in a story/photos.
PM as suggested is an option, just be aware that in today’s rapidly changing media market — plus the fact that the listings were put together a year ago — they might not be accurate (especially the contact names). Check around on the Web for publication listings as well. |

->> with out a story, it will be a difficult sell. very few publications run picture stories or a picture by itself. but if a wire service is covering the event, then you might luck out.
as mentioned above, the most likely source will be publications from the hometowns of the participants or publications dealing with your subject matter. |

->> I don't mean to pick on you but I am going to point out an issue; Spelling.
"How and were to resell a story"
The word is "where".
We have had this discussion before, spelling and grammar can make a big difference especially when you are talking about doing "a photostory with long captions".
I have sold many a concept with the added incentive that I would write the 400 or 1500 word story to go with it. And I have picked up a reasonably worthwhile additional fee for the writing of the story. But the clients for this are looking for a reasonably 'ready to go' story, clear of spelling and grammatical failures. |

->> Thanks for all the advice. I will start by looking into the hometown link. I have connections with two guys from LA and I think we have a few publications out here I might be able to contact.
And yes, I know about my grammar is not my strongest point. I already have a few people lined up to help proof read. |

->> Dan I am not going to give you a hard time for your spelling. Hell I got problems there too. Besides a guy name Ernest Hemingway couldnt spell a damn and never went to college either. But if afterwards someone can help you with it then you will be fine. Ian has a great point there.
FIRST, IF you have got a story in mind then do as many in here mentioned. What I would tell you is, dont mention the story idea. Otherwise a few others may fight you for that too. Why share it?
YOU can find out the wheres, how, when and who of selling your piece without been so open. YOU may have a few photographers already calling some clients with your own idea.
YOu can also go to the library or book store and seek any magazine that does this type of stories.
My first trip to Cuba in '89 or 90 I called a few magz. At that time all I got was, "no we are no interested in Cuba" To," Cuba??." So I went on my own. When I got back there were a couple msgs from clients re Cuba.
Those two calls paid for my first trip and a few others. After the first one other magazines were sending me there and 35 trips later I still make money when I travel there. So yes you can make $$ with your photo essays speacially if you are doing it first. Lots of research. Also dont forget those in flight magazines and I am sure those cruise ships also have publications catering to that crowd. Again do the research. Hell, if I did it long before there was the internet surely you can find it much easier now too. Again, dont expect people to take you all the way to the photo editors/art buyers front door. Otherwise they will do it first.
Is a fun and great idea.. I am a bit tempted but heck I dont have the time.
All best
