David Simon on the Downfall of American Newspapers
Jason Fritz, Student/Intern
San Francisco | CA | USA | Posted: 6:08 PM on 05.12.09
->> David Simon, former Baltimore Sun cops reporter and creator of the acclaimed television series The Wire, testifies before congress about the downfall of the American newspaper.

The Wire is about the only good thing I can think of to come from the never ending rounds of layoffs and buyouts.

Interesting read.

->> Thanks for the heads up, Jason. I loved The Wire, as did I love Homicide (actually re-watching it now with the wife -- who'd never seen it -- via Netflix).

Definitely curious what Simon has to say on the "state of things." I heard him talk a while back on Fresh Air (
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=87940925) and while the dude was definitely bitter (understandably so) about newspapering, he did have some excellent points to make.

The final season was indeed interesting. Ironically, my wife and I were watching it (again, through Netflix) right in the middle of our penultimate (and by no means the "last last," I'm sure) reduction in force. Oh the irony. For me, though, Season Four was the best; that and any scene or storyline that involved Omar Little (my favorite character ... and our President's too!)

"A man got to have a code!"

Enjoyed watching your Publisher and CEO James Moroney -- Dallas Morning News -- speak in the video. The interaction after the testimony is interesting.
