ethical question

->> I shoot images for the local University. I am contracted to shoot their sports on a semester to semester basis. There is no written contract, only a verbal agreement for me to supply them with photos of team athletes.
There has been a lot of coverage today in re: a coach being arrested for alleged improper sexual contact and assault.
In my position, is it okay for me to farm out one of my images to the local papers? Without a contract, am I obligated to run this by the University first? Will this be frowned upon by them if I do? This news has already hit the national wires so..
Any thoughts or advice?

->> Peter,
Not obligated, but ask yourself the question: If they don't approve, can you live with the result.. ie..no more jobs.
This isn't so much ethical as political. Nothing prohibits you from doing it, if you don't care about any potential fallout. |

| ->> I agree no ethical issue here but I would bet almost 100% you will have shot your last assignment for the university if you give the photos to the paper. |

->> ALLEGED=Unproven=without proof
Folks when that word comes around be careful how you take it.
Many people had been sent to jail, or attacked in the media based on ALLEGATIONS. Yet when the truth finally comes out some of those people are totally innocent. Yet his/her name has been splashed in the news prints/TV and families and careers destroyed.
So Peter I would stay away from that specially if is a place that has been giving you financial support and an opportunity to shoot.
FOr sure you dont want to be saying later "wow, I put a nail in the hands of an innocent person."
Then is too late to get around the rigamarole of the events.
Something else, "There is no written contract, only a verbal agreement for me to supply... " IT will do you tons of good if you do have a win/win clear written contract with them. Protect yourself and your images.

->> Thanks for all of your replies.
Chuck, Michael I guess my gut was correct and I am not going to sell any images. I appreciate you taking the time to answer.
Manuello, The Syracuse lax fiasco comes to mind so I hear you. Also, I intend to write up a contract for the next year. We need to iron out some details in re: print sales etc. and the only way to go there is in writing.
Aaron, If I understand your analogy, I guess that is part of the deal when working for a large political machine.
take care and thanks again,
Peter |
