Replacing my iPhone

->> I wonder if any of the cheaper phones that look like iPhones work similarly. I need to be able to check my Gmail email accounts, text, phone, calendar and show some photo galleries I had loaded to my iPhone. Would be nice to get a cheaper data/text plan than the ones available for the iPhone. AND, the phone has to be Apple friendly.
Thanks in advance. |

->> My suggestion is that you look at Nokias phones.
(I use Nokia E71 and an Apple MacBook personally).
They are generally Apple friendly.
There are plugins for Isync that makes it easy to sync them with the contacts and calendar on your Mac.

Nokia also offers software to sync multimedia between your Mac and phone easily.

When it comes to Gmail there is two possibilities.
1. Use Gmail IMAP possibilities and use the built in email client which are in the phone.
(In order to do that you will need to activate Gmails IMAP support in the settings tab found when logged in to Gmail).
2. Use Googles Symbian application.
About the photo-gallery Nokia is currently developing that.
And it can be downloaded as a "beta" application here:

->> If you want access to Gmail, why not switch to the T-mobile's G1, aka the google phone?
I'm not sure if Android(the G1's OS) is mac friendly but most other touch screen phones run off windows mobile 6, which is not. There are programs to get around this though. I use mark/space's Missing sync program and it works pretty well syncing ical and my address book with my HTC 8125.

->> You mean you have an iphone now but want something cheaper?
I have no problems with g-mail and iphone. Go to: mail.google.com
My g-mail messages are forwarded to my iphone anyway so I have no need to log on. |

| ->> There is a rumor going around that AT&T will drop the data prices with the new iPhone introduction next month - maybe worth waiting for. I tried the LG Dare when I was hoping to stay with Verizon and hated it in comparison to my iPod touch, which pushed me to an iPhone - I would never go back even though I agree the monthly price is a bit high. |

->> If you get one of the Windows Mobile phones with a touch screen (HTC Touch Pro2, Samsung Omnia, and many others) you can load it up with the "SPB" Mobile Shell (and their other programs if you like them). You'll get the new graphical interface that so many people seem to enjoy, along with all the powers of Windows Mobile including multi-tasking and the ability to use the phone more like you would use a small computer. Most of the newer ones come with 5-meg cameras with decent lenses and software too. Get one that's unlocked to begin with, and you can put in any SIM card, change batteries if needed, and use just about any type of email. It also has "real" Bluetooth, with no restrictions about what kind of phones it can connect to.
The disadvantage of course is price, as if you're buying an unlocked phone, it will cost more than if the phone price is partially covered by your mobile service provider.
If you neither need nor want all the potential power of Windows, I'd agree with the first poster about the Nokia phones. They seem to have thought of just about everything. The newest one, to be released in the next month or so, is the n97, with touch-screen and full QWERTY keyboard. |
