Help with Pricing for One image

->> I received this email yesterday about a image that someone wants to buy off of me and get the rights.
"I'm ___ dad. One of my all-time favorite photos of __ is the one you took of her in Kibera skipping along with the children. Would you consider selling me the image and the rights to the image? I would like make prints of it etc., maybe using it for FedEx Diversity for example. I would attribute the photo to you (along with your web address) any time I used the image. Let me know what you would want for it if you will sell it to me."
I have never really sold a image of mine before and the one part that has me confused is about using it for Fedex. I know that he works for Fedex, but I have no idea what to charge for something like this. I do not want to screw him or myself over on a price.
I tried looking through the message board but could not seem to find anything about pricing for one image.
Any help would be great appreciated.
Thanks Josh |

->> If I sold more images, I would look into getting fotoQuote if I sold more images, however right now for what I do, there is no need for it. Also this is my first image I would be giving away the rights to. So I dont think I am gonna spend $140 for one image.
Thanks for the suggestion Steve. |

->> There is a free stock photo price calculator located here: http://www.photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm
I don't deal much in stock (OK, at all), so I've not purchased FotoQuote and have no clue how it compares, but it might provide you with a starting point. |

->> Josh,
You really don't want to give away the rights, especially if he wants to use it for a commercial purpose. Just him asking for the rights puts up red flags. You need to find out exactly how he wants to use the image before you can price it, there isn't a one price fits all, there's no way anyone can tell you how much to charge without knowing details. That's how it works. |

->> Josh,
I LOVE this question. Your potential client understands and respects copyright, enough to ask you for a price for rights. The message is getting through! Plus, he values your artistic vision.
Here's what I'd do, and I realize I'm leaving myself open to differences of opinion, but you asked for specific suggestions.
I'd come up with a quote for the specific rights the client needs. I would maintain copyright.
I'd first separate the personal use from whatever the FedEx diversity thing is. I'd define personal use very specifically, as an example: prints for home/desk display, posting on personal social networking sites, prints included in personal correspondence, email to friends/relatives, use on personal media devices (iphones, etc.). Strictly no corporate/business/revenue or PR generating use. Maybe someone can come up with a better specification, but that's my top of the head thought. For that I'd charge some reasonable multiple of what I normally charge for an 8x10, figuring that's a ballpark of the realistic revenue I'm giving up by releasing the file (and the file I'd release would be suitable for max 8x10s under this pricing rubric).
As for the FedEx diversity thing, I'd ask for more information. Is this some kind of program where employees provide family pictures to the company? If so, what rights, if any, transfer to the company by submitting it? Will it be used only for internal corporate purposes, or could it be displayed to consumers? Is this some kind of PR use, in reality? If so, that's fine, and you can price accordingly, using fotoquote or a calculator like Joshua pointed you to (I think sportsshooter member John Harrington has a pricing calculator on his site, too, FYI). Who knows? You may be directed to a PR person at FedEx and can find out the details of what they want and perhaps build a new business relationship there. In any event, you'd want to price it so it works for you, and fulfills your clients needs in a reasonable way.

| ->> A quick check of Fotoquote for Corporate Magazine and Newsleter, both internal and external coaches licensing fees at minimum are well above the the price for a copy of Fotoquote for yourself. Also, just my observation, it is very rare for someone here on SS would post a 'price' for you to use as a baseline. There are many factors involved as Juliann and Shelly mentioned above. |

->> Quite honestly, this may even sound greedy, but get all you can bargain for.
There are photographers selling their work for unheard of prices--both too cheap and what many think maybe too high.
I don't think anyone on this board will be disappointed if you charge and get more than they would have thought.
Always ask what someone's budget is, many times they will surprise you and quote something higher than you could have imagined. |

->> But why sell it? Just license the rights according to his needs.
"Any Time I use the image." means that later on he can license that photo to Coca Cola, AT&T, Insurance Co, Banks etc etc
All this time he could be getting an usage fees of $10K or more per licensing. This person is not a photographer YET he knows the value of © a lot more than you. His thoughts are on the long run while you are thinking how much I can get right now.
Protect your images and just license the rights to it with a time limit.
"->> If I sold more images, I would look into getting
fotoQuote if I sold more images, however right now for what I do,.."
IF you are serious about getting into the biz of photography then get FotoQ, any other stock fees licensing programs and take some photo related biz classes.
Each time I do teach workshops I make that a strong part of my presentation. Otherwise your way of thinking is that get too many shooters in trouble and then search for help when is too late.

->> Thanks for the suggestions everyone. It was actually a misunderstanding through email. All he really wanted was a print. He wanted to have a picture of his daughter to hang in his office.
This was the first I ever sold a image to a client outside of a newspaper.
Thanks again everyone. I now know what to do when the real situation arises.

| ->> Register the photo with the copyright office and mark the back of the image with a copyright (so there's no misunderstanding). It seems like he had more in mind than a print since he was knowledgeable enough to ask about the rights. |
