| ->> Thanks Pouya.... it was the funniest thing I've ever seen happen during a live shot. That kid instantly became Litherland's hero. |

->> Thanks Tyson. Anyway, you wanted more background and here it is:
The guy being interviewed was one of the crew members on the commercial vessel that was taken by Somali pirates last month. He lives in my coverage area and there was a Welcome Home "parade" for him on the main street of a nearby shopping district. Anyway, the organizer had all of the media in the Tampa Bay area out there. This included 6 still shooter and 6 local TV stations and about another 6 "guys with cameras". Also, about 200 people showed up to welcome him home and watch the mini parade and his little speech (photo op and sound bite) at the podium.
Anyway, when it was over this guy (who really was pretty cool) and his wife were doing all sorts of interviews with all of the various television stations and they were sticking their two kids (the baby and the peepee boy) in front of the cameras and generally hamming it up. The guy's speech and the interviews took longer than we would have expected and the little boy kept telling his mother and father that he had to "go to the potty" but they kept ignoring him and doing more interviews.
Finally the family started doing a live spot with a local ABC affiliate and the other stations were rolling and most of the still shooter were still trying to work a photo of the family together. So dad, while on live television, picks up little Jr and attempts to hold him during the interview and the kid threw a total hissy fit (and I DO NOT blame him). He started kicking his legs and screaming during the live spot and dad set him down right in front of me and Chip Litherland. The kid screamed and ran over to the bushes right between me and Chip and immediately dropped his pants (faster than I've ever seen anyone drop their pants) and lifted up his shirt and began to pee (rocking side to side in a defiant and relieved manner) on the bushes right in front of us, about 8 other shooters/ video guys, television "talent" and about 200 well-wishers.
Most of the other journalists backed away a bit because they were laughing and the ABC affiliate was still live. Well, dad didn't care that he was on live TV. He saw what his kid was doing and got the biggest smile on his face and started laughing (mom didn't appear quite as happy). It was pretty cool to see how proud dad was of his kid. Chip and I were equally impressed with this kid and rather than back away I chose to document it to share it with you and to send the image to his father so the family could have a lasting momento of this incident that will haunt this child at family gathering for the rest of his life.
One of Chip Facebook friends said is best when he commented on the photo and simple said, "That kid is punk rock!"
Well, that kid IS punk rock. He's our hero. He told his parents he had to "potty" and they didn't listen so he did what he had to do and then enjoyed the heck out of it. I personally think that the kid deserves a gift from Think Tank because he earned my respect that day. |
