AF on D700
Phil Hawkins, Photographer
Fresno | ca | usa | Posted: 4:07 PM on 04.30.09
->> I've got a new D700, and so far so good, ridiculous image quality, but the AF is way off accurate. I am told that sometimes the AF needs to be "tuned"... How does one do that or does it need to be sent in?

Thanks

->> My D700's rock my lame world. As for the AF, I haven't had any issues but I've considered doing some fine tuning just because I love to shoot @ f/1.4. The best way is to get a Lens Align: http://www.rawworkflow.com/lensalign

->> Consider carefully which focussing mode you use. Someone posted this before but it is good to watch. The Nikon Digitutor- http://tinyurl.com/cuupqc
There is a lot of good info there.

I turned off the Focus Tracking with Lock On and that helped a lot too. You will need to experiment to find which works best for you.

->> I have constant fine-tuning problems with my D300, which I believe has the same, or nearly identical, AF system. I guess every single lens has be tweaked to each camera. The fine tuning thing is good to have, but constantly having to jack with it is a pain. Every time you think you've got it nailed down, another lens is front-focuing every frame just enough to tick you off.

->> I agree..I had issues with my d300 too and had to AF fine tune some of the older lenses 80-200 etc because they were front focusing. It can't hurt to AF fine tune and then keep the setting in memory for the future. The newer lenses all seem tack sharp so I'm guessing it's mostly with the non AFS lenses. Good luck...
