Thoughts on T-mobile's G1 " the google Phone"
Joshua Prezant, Photographer

->> Anyone using it? Thoughts? Can it be used to work as a modem to transmit picture from a laptop? Can it open word documents and PDFs?
How is it with e-mails? Don;t care how well it plays music or videos.
Thanks
Joshua

->> I have the G1 and really like it. There isn't a MS Office for Android yet but there are a few companies working on that. You can't tether it, or any other 3G phone, so I use an FTP app to transmit and it works very well. The mobile mapping and other functions make it an asset.

Oh and e-mail and system sync is a snap.

->> Jonathan,
How does that FTP app work? Also, what about PDFs?
What other reasons does this phone work well with a photographer on the go?

->> I connect my G1 to my laptop and transfer files to the phone's SD card. Then I just use the FTP program to send them to the client. Transmit speed is pretty good even without 3G. There are PDF reader apps out there. The browser is top notch. The great thing about the G1, and the iPhone, is the availability of loads of applications - most of which are only good for wasting time. However there are numerous apps that make things easier for professionals. Personally I love the real keyboard. You can multi finger type on it unlike the virtual keyboards. That's just me.

Personally I like an application called Starmap which will show you via your GPS and compass what stars are in front of you as if your phone is a tiny planetarium. That way you can scout night time long exposures and know a head of time what kind of star field will be behind your subject.

Thanks
Joshua

->> I had a chance to play with the Google phone for a while. It's quite nice. Until recently, my favorite phone has been the Nokia n95 (now it's the n96, and soon will be updated with n97).

I got a Samsung Omnia to learn about Windows Mobile. After lots of discussion about all the phones, I don't think I would get another phone other than one with Windows 6.1 or newer. There are more advantages than I have time to list here, and if you put on the SPB utilities, the graphic interface is every bit as nice as the iphone, with all the power behind it from Windows.

Here's something I copied from the web, that says it better than I could:

"There are still many features and functions missing on the iPhone (even after the upcoming 3.0 update) that limit what a power user can do with the device. For example there is no video recording, no multitasking, no Bluetooth keyboard support, US wireless carrier choice (Windows Mobile and RIM rule here), no accessible file structure (results in no email attachment support or iPhone as an external drive), no expandable storage capacity, and no removable battery."

If I were picking a phone today, in my opinion the best one out is the HTC Touch Pro2, with a huge high-resolution screen, 5-meg camera, and all the power of Windows. The HTC interface pretty much hides the Windows type interface, and the SPB utilities might be even better. If you get an unlocked one overseas, you can use it on any carrier in the USA or elsewhere, with any SIM card you wish to put in it. Every other phone I can think of seems like a "toy" compared to this one.

I've been trying to buy one, but they're apparently just now becoming available in much of Asia. I've probably got a few more weeks to wait before I can find one.

(With the SPB utilities and the latest firmware update for the Omnia, I've already got almost everything the HTC will provide, with the exception of a "real" keyboard. If you get an Omnia, get the i900 as sold overseas - or if you get one available in the USA, check if you lose any functions you might have wanted. USA model phones will work best with the high-speed networks in the USA though, so that's a reason for getting one locally.)

Thanks, Christine

->> Christine I'm using AndFTP. It works quite well.(Pretty kitty btw) And unlike the iPhone the G1 does do multitasking, it seems to nicely for me, has multiple carriers, has file structure, has expandable storage and a removable battery.

->> I have been using the G1 for about a month now. The biggest complaint I have is the battery life- it is pretty weak if you are using it throughout the day. If you are a light user, the charge will last the whole day no problem- if you are surfing the web, using the GPS, transmitting, you will be charging throughout the day.

With that one complaint out of the way, I will say that I love the phone. I really like the fact that the memory is expandable (now that a 16GB microsd is $50), the battery is replaceable, and the actual keyboard. There are apps for just about everything, I don't think that there are nearly as many as there are for the iPhone, but the big ones are there.

There are apps for opening Microsoft Office Files- I have not tried them, but they are there. Email is a dream on it, in my opinion. My primary email is my Gmail and it works seamlessly. I also have my Yahoo and another one (hosted by GoDaddy) that also come through on the phone no problem.

I tried to set up my school email, which is a Microsoft Outlook/Web Access account and that one will not sync with the G1.

The camera on it is pretty good- 3MP, if you want to get into fancy camera apps those are available.

There are PDF viewer applications that are getting good reviews, although I have not tried them.

Like I said, my biggest complaint is battery life, and as mentioned, not being able to tether to my MacBook. I would recommend this phone. Hope this helps a little.

->> I actually have really good battery life with my G1. I turn the GPS off and run on 2G unless I need to be on the web or transmit. I can get a full day with a good amount of talk time on a single charge. GPS and 3G take much more power but just to be safe I keep a charger in my car but have only used it once.

->> Check out the app called Power Manager, which let's you choose different power profiles just like a laptop does. It works great to quickly toggle on/off the different power-draining settings like gps or wifi -- easily the most valuable app for the phone.

I have also fallen in love with Shazam, which identifies music for you...great stuff. Google maps integration with gps location is great too.

This is by far the best phone I have ever owned. The keyboard, the email and messaging capabilities, the plethora of free apps, and the ability to multitask just rock. It seems like every day I find another thing to like about the phone.

Also, the phone makes an excellent and handy portfolio, I have most of my web portfolio on it and the images just look great. Nothing like being able to show real work instantly.

Daniel
