->> Thanks George...

ok-I downloaded this but it won't let me open-it says "camera raw requires a minimum display resolution of 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high. Your display is set to a lower resolution. Continue anyway?"

when I hit yes-I can't open the RAW file

does anyone know how this MAC gal changes the display resolution on a PC?

->> Hi Deb

same boat as you are. I did buy a Asus Eeee and I am setup as you are..PS elements and PM.. I ran into the same thing. I was able to hit yes on continue anyway, but you can only see 2/3 of the raw window. So I changed my resolution to 1024 by 768. To do this , right click anywhere on your desktop, select properties and then settings. You then can change it.. Here is the catch, your desktop will not fit on your screen, you will have to scroll up and down. The resolution is bigger than the screen can handle. Its the only way to work on ACR. You still will not see the whole ACR window, but you will be able to scroll up and down..

So far thats the only drawback I have with the Asus. I am a Mac person as well, but used to build PC's years ago, so that knowledge helps.

Also to eject your card reader, right click on the drive and select Eject. I forgot to answer that question when I was picking your brain about buying the machine.

I went with the full flash drive model. Have a 16gd flash drive as the main and a 32GB second drive. Its a great tool, but RAW is a pain.. I am going to DL the DNG converter as aback up.

->> Hi Jeff,

I just figured this out too-it sort of scrolls by itself
I was also told that once the card is done reading, you can eject it. I couldn't figure out what to do so I was shutting off the computer and then removing the card. PC people-is it true you just remove the card once it is all done copying?

Jeff-when you say full flash drive model-is that the device that plugs into the USB port or something else? I have an 8GB one-didn't know they came higher. I have just started to shoot RAW (never did before and WOW-I was really missing out!) so a larger one would come in handy.

For the Nikon users-what are XPM files? When I open up a RAW file, then save as a JPEG, there is a XMP file too

->> The XMP file hold the data of the changes you made to the raw file in ACR. Its funny, I never really shot jpg until I got this netbook.

My main HD is 12 gig , partitioned into 4 and 8 Gb partitions. I then have a 32GB SD card in the built in slot where I store all my "PortableApp" programs and files. I think I am going to take this in and have the main upgraded to 32GB or 64GB as well. I may even take the plunge and install OS X on it. Its a bit tedious , but can be done.

I basically am going to use this to do quick jobs shooting jpg, and watching Hulu ! I have to admit PS Elements does a great job. For $80 its a great deal...and it looks all fancy on a PC with its cool dark look.

I shot a show last weekend and I am glad I still kept my ancient G4 PB..The netbook is great to have as a tool, but as big job machine, its not there yet.

Is your netbook the 12 gig one? I think mine is 160 GB

->> If you delete, its not a big deal. Any changes you made to the NEF file will not be remembered in ACR. Lets say you open up the NEF, change the exposure, brightness and clarity. The XMP file will hold the data that you did that and the next time you open that NEF file, those changes will apply. If you delete it, it will just open as you shot it. The NEF is fine. It has nothing to do with the jpg.

Mine is the 12GB solid state drive. Yours has a "regular " HD in it, mine is a flash drive. Less energy and the battery lasts a bit longer. Its not that big of a deal other than you have way more storage. MY HD is basically what goes in a D90.
Basically no moving parts, laptop runs cooler and longer, but at a price. I do love this thing, Its also a great Skype machine with its built in camera.

I think I follow your lead as I picked up a D90 to figure out this video fad ! Its pretty cool, tho trying to learn Final Cut Express is another story...

->> Debra,

As far as ejecting the card goes. If you use PhotoMechanic (and some other programs) you can tell it to eject the card once the ingest is complete and it will take care of the "un-mounting" of the drive for you.

Some computers with built-in readers don't really require the "un-mount" process and you can just pull the card when done.

Otherwise you have to go to your devices (usually can be found in the task bar at the bottom right of a Windows screen) and select the "Safely Remove Hardware" and then the USB drive and it will say "Safe to Remove"

Also, many netbooks have screens that are too low of a resolution to display some programs such as the RAW windows.
