Any Weird Habits You All Have When Shooting?

->> I have two pairs of "shooting" shoes that I wear when I shoot:
1.) A beat-to-hell pair of Adidas Gazelles I bought for $20 new
2.) A sick pair of red and blue Nike dunk hi-tops.
I feel cool and good in these shoes and for whatever reason, have good days when I wear them.
Anyone else have weird/interesting habits, things you wear, etc. while on the job. |

| ->> (Good thread.) I have an old "Nikon: The Professionals Choice" pewter keychain medallion that was given to me in the early 1980's when I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Never, ever leave home without it. That and a much cherished Leatherman tool I got as a Christmas present from a colleague when we were both starting our careers... I too chew a lot of gum, particularly when shooting sports. The bigger the game, the more gum I pack. -cg. |

But, to hop back on topic, I have to concentrate when I go vertical to keep from pulling my composition to the right. |

| ->> I have a pair of "shootin' shorts," that I enjoy wearing. They are khaki shorts I bought at Dillards a few years ago. They have been ripped on the side and torn in the back and I have managed to have them repaired to where they still look pretty good. I just feel real comfy in these shorts along with a gray t-shirt. This is warmer weather only gear. |

->> Weird habits? Where do I start? I know things are going well when I start to grin uncontrollably behind the camera. Many times when shooting portraits I have been asked by my subjects if I'm always that happy. I don't know I'm doing it most of the time but when I realise that I am, I know that the shoot is going well. Strangely, I never notice if I'm not grinning.
My other habit is singing. Again, I don't always know that I'm doing it. It's usually the last song that I heard before I got out of the car - which can be embarrassing. When I catch myself singing uncool songs I force myself to sing something credible, which ruins my concentration, which affects the pictures. I was shooting on a construction site the other day and I was singing "This land is your land" the wonderful Woodie Guthrie song (although I only have the Springsteen versions). I'm not even American and this song raises the hairs on the back of my neck - what the hell must it do for you guys?
Final habit that I will own up to is cleaning lenses with an old cotton handkerchief. I had it as a Christmas present when I was about six or seven years of age and it has an "N" in one corner. It lives in my bag and gets washed once in a while. |

->> I have 2 habits
1 - for sports - I used to play hockey at at the junior level and as a goalie had a "national anthem" ritual. I still do it to this day when I shoot. I rock back and forth from one foot to the other and put my hat back on before the last line of the anthem.
2 - for weddings/corporate - I need to dress like a rock-n-rolla. Basically any outfit from Metropark will do for any occasion |

->> I played baseball for 20 years and before each game I would get psyched up with music, usually some Metallica or other hard hitting rock. I didn't feel comfortable or like I would have a good game unless I did that.
I still do that now before I shoot a game or I don't feel like I'm ready. Right at tip-off, kick-off, or the first pitch I have to put on something like Enter Sandman, or Welcome to the Jungle. I guess ballplayers are really superstitious. |

->> I seem to shoot better wearing my Columbia "zip off leg" cargo pants and a Tilley hat. The SID's sometimes play Raiders of Lost Ark theme when I get to the field.
Actually, the hat keeps my face in the shade, making a darker reflection to help me see the image on screen better in bright sunlight. Think of it as a chimp enhancer.

->> When I first got into photojournalism, my pop, who has been a banker for the past 40+ years, bought me a little paper-pad holder, 4x2 inches, and custom made me little notepads with my name and my cell # on the top. Must have printed enough pads to last me the next 10 years! It's without a doubt one of the most thoughtful gifts anyone has ever given me, and is with me on every photo shoot.
(Incidentally, paper products are to bankers what camera bags are to photogs, different things for every occasion and one can never have enough variety...) |
