Advice: Photo Archiving Software

->> I'm looking for advice on what programs people or institutions are using to manage their photo archives.
We have a server bogged down with images at my university and are wondering if we should switch from Extensis Portfolio as a means to organize and search for them.
It will be used by about 7 different workstations (Mac and PC) to search and pull photos from the network with myself being the only administrator adding images to the server.
Thanks for any help. |

| ->> Look at database solutions offered by Merlin and Software Construction Company's Media Grid. Those are used by many newspapers to manage thousands of files with multiple users. |

->> Ed-
Are you using Portfolio Server or just Portfolio as stand alone clients?
I'm curious as to your definition of "bogged down". I am currently using Portfolio Server with about 14 clients in maintaining the Chicago White Sox image archive with 100,000 plus images cataloged without a hiccup.
I too am the admin regarding adding images to the libraries.
I've been using Portfolio since 1999.
If you're looking for alternatives, I really like the option of using PhotoShelter as a solution for archive management. I personally use PhotoShelter for my own archive and it is very powerful, fast, and allows you to have "world wide" access to your images.
Plus your images are stored off site for added safety.

->> If it is just for you and not something that needs to be networked, then the Cantos stand alone package works. Mediadex. http://mediadex.com/us/index.htm
I have used this for my personal system and use PhotoCore for network system for clients. |

->> After going back and reading more carefully I believe you need what SMU is using--PhotoCore.

USPressive, the Braves, The Broncos and others are using this. It is a great system. |
