Rights question

->> I tried to find something similar in prior threads before posting and nothing quite answered my question,

I shoot as a freelancer for a local paper and I found one of my assignment photos posted on a private companies Blog that is in the same "Industry" as my assignment. The cutline and credits are present and I seriously doubt the paper would give a squirt if I went to them. Do I have the right to approach the blog or should I just blow it off? Has anyone else came across this or something similar? It does bother me to see my work posted without my consent or knowledge and not just monetarily it's a matter of principal.

->> Of course, you have a right to approach any unauthorized use of your work product.

Hmm, how did they get possession? If not from you then it had to be from your newspaper client. Unless you shoot for them in a work for hire situation do they realize that you own your work? Perhaps they need to be educated.

I am fortunate in that the papers I do business with are very sensitive to my rights of ownership and direct any requests for photos to me. That behavior should be the norm in the industry.

->> Nick - as Steven said, do you know where they got the image? If it's on the company's website they simply could've lifted it off the newspaper's blog.

More importantly, what is you work relationship with the newspaper you freelance for? Do you have a contract? Specifically, who owns the rights to the images you produce for the newspaper?

->> Sorry, meant to say the company "could've lifted it off the newspaper's website."
