Please join me in sending him as many good thoughts and prayers as possible and wish him a speedy recovery. Mark, always a star with the AP, has always been a class act and a team player and a great guy to work with. A lot of newspapers are gonna be looking for your Lakers photos. Get well! |

Now, everyone else who hasn't had a checkup lately; has been feeling poorly, had chest pains or heartburn, or just doesn't feel "right", go get looked at....TODAY.

->> Wow! I'm going to have a really hard time living up to what many of you are saying about me, but I'm glad that I'm still around to try. Thank you all so much. It's practically worth almost dying to find out what people think of you.
Michael Fischer wrote me a truly heartfelt (no pun intended) email about his experience with this. I can't thank you enough Michael.
One of the positive things to come out of this is that I have a chance to worn others. I made the mistake of thinking that, because my symptoms weren't classic, that it wasn't a heart attack. There was also a little denial.
I shot a Lakers game on Tuesday night and had to catch a 6a flight to Ft. Lauderdale the next day for a company meeting that I didn't want to miss. I laid down to go to sleep at 2a and immediately got a severe sore throat that radiated a little into my chest, a little nausea and a little bit of the sweats. Not that unusual. I thought maybe I had some food poisoning. The problem was that there was no relief from it. I went ahead and got on a plane and kept feeling the same way. I waited some more till our meeting on Thursday before some of my co-workers insisted on calling an ambulance. Twenty nine hours after my symptoms started I was at the hospital. Fifteen minutes after that I was being sedated, having a catheter run up my femoral artery and having a stent put in my 100% blocked artery. It wasn't till then that I had the classic "I feel like there's an elephant sitting on my chest" feeling. At that point I thought I was done.
The point here is that I you even remotely think you're having a heart attack, get checked out. DON'T WAIT!
Many thanks again to everyone for their kind words. |

->> As a PSA from one of "The Club" to other SS'ers:
The Five Most Common Signs of a Heart Attack:
1) Chest pain (center, left side, doesn't matter where)
2) Sweating or clammy skin.
3) Feeling light-headed
4) Nausea
5) Disorientation
You may experience ALL or just SOME of them... I had #1, #2, and #4. (Mark, I play hockey with a guy that had one and he said what he felt was like a "brain freeze" in his throat.)
If you experience any combination of the above, get to an ER ASAP. Walk in and say "Chest Pain"... and watch the reaction. The first 60 minutes is what's known as the "Golden Hour". If you can get treatment in this period of time the chances of minimizing the harm to you goes way up. Don't try and "though it out"... you may pay with your life. Remember, one of the most common first signs of heart disease is sudden death.
I was working outside when I had mine and I thought I'd pulled a chest muscle. I went inside and laid down and realized that even when I held still it hurt. I realized that I was sweaty in a cool room and I my stomach was feeling funny. I realized that I had three of the five symptoms and suggested that we go to the ER. The ER staff said I was an exception in recognizing I had a problem and getting help. All too often if it's not a Fred Sanford "I'm coming to meet you, Elizabeth" heart attack, people don't seek attention right away. |
