Do You Label Your Gear?
Diego James Robles, Student/Intern, Photographer

->> It's hard to believe but after a few short years of shooting, I have amassed a few tools I care about and depend upon to make a living.

Years ago when I was in the army, I left behind my brand new 20D and grip in the chow hall (dining facility for you civilians). Lucky for me, it was the biggest camera on base and everybody knew it belong to the goofy kid with glasses.

Today all my gear is insured but not labeled. If I were to lose a 1D, it would be covered by my insurance but I'd rather save the deductible and hopefully have it returned by some decent human being.

Do you label your gear and if so, where can I get affordable labels that are made for heavy use on electronic gear? Send me a message offline if you feel more comfortable doing so. Thanks for looking.

Try mavericklabel.com. I've ordered from them several times and their stuff is good. Here's a link to the labels I use for my gear:

Says what it does, does what it says. Comes pretty quickly, too.

Here is another company that uses an #ID system and reward.

Shelley's link is a better deal if all you need are labels.

->> All of my gear is labeled. My cameras, lenses, batteries, cords, chargers, laptops, mobile phone, etc etc. If it walks out the door it is labeled (and usually has pink tape on it as well).

I use a simple Brother P-Touch label maker. This allows me to print whatever labels I need, when I need, and to change the info if required.

You can see the labels I use here on my laptops :

->> You have a much better chance of getting your gear back if you have your name and phone # on it. That also goes for things like your wallet and cell phone. How many people think to put their contact info in their wallet?

I find all kinds of things during my daily walks and I shouldn't have to play detective to get your wallet or cell phone back to you when you left it on your car and it falls into the street. On your cell phone, be sure to put a contact entry like Home or If Found. That way whoever finds it has a good idea to call that # to get it back to you.

Recently, I switched over to this ...

Has gone over pretty well at our various sports venues around here, but man -- not so much with TSA screeners!!

->> GJ,

Gear has to stand out not only so you quickly grab your own gear on the sideline, but so it is less likely to get stolen...because its hard to steal something that stands out.

I use this on all my gear
http://ThreeTape.notlong.com and I use it like this http://PinkTape.notlong.com

Every bag I have is clearly marked in bright flamingo pink duct tape. It would be hard for it to walk without me noticing it.

I have had a pocket wizard walk off at a news event in a pro stadium, and now I have learned my lesson and label all my gear. I used to use red gaffers tape too, but have not recently, since I have tried to remain a fly-on-the-wall for my Pj work.

Every thing I own, from camera bodies, batteries, flashes, lenses, cd jewel cases, my tripod, on and on and on ( and especially my i-phone) has a simple label - my name, my cell phone # and web site. it's already paid off a couple of times on forgotten gear.

I'm worried about the labels potentially peeling off inside the camera, which could be a disastrous situation...

I'm not familiar with the maverick ;abels, but I can testify that the Brother labels haven't come off the cards I've had them on since 2003.

Does anyone else put ICE - In Case of Emergency on their contacts list on their cell phone?

So that first responders or bystanders know who to call if something bad were to happen.

I do have an "ICE" contact in my phone. I figured, it took me 2 minutes to set-up and if something does happen it certainly couldn't hurt (anymore) for me to have that entry in my phone.

For less than $50 it should be an easy sale. You get to label photo gear, and she can do Tupperware that goes to potluck dinners.

->> Rich "How many people think to put their contact info in their wallet? " My wallet got all the info they need and then some :) Including my friends Jackson, Hamilton & Washington and maybe a Franklin or two.

ON another note, a GREAT THING to do is also to label your kids cell phone, backpack, sports gears, tennis racket, baseball bat, gloves, Macbook etc.. Always put your own phone number in there with their names. Chances are one of their friends may find it and will know who she is instead of you but with the safety of calling you instead of her specially if a stranger finds it.

Nobody looses things as children. And we are all children :)

Also besides our wallets and our phones is also great to ICE our kids phone too..

Also on your wallet or somewhere else, you iphone, keep a tab of all your vip numbers: banks, credit cards in case you need to call to cancel them ASAP.

These are also handy phones to have:
The numbers are: Equifax: 1-800-525-6285 Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742 Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289 Social Security Administration (fraud line)1-800-269-0271

->> My dad labeled everything I owned when I was a kid. It drove me crazy. Now I understand why. I try to label everything I own. I recently lost my g10 camera the 2nd day I had it. Didn't have time to put a label on it. Luckily, my neighbor found it. If not, someone would have had a pretty nice camera. It's hard to return if you don't have your name on it.

I make my own labels using Adobe Illustrator. I usually cover them with the clear packing tape so they don't wear off easily and it makes the labels harder to remove, if someone tries to steal your equipment.

I'm always amazed at some of the gear I find that doesn't have a name on it. I still have a Gitzo monopod I found from 1993 at a game. It was left next to my bag. I asked everyone I knew at the game if it was there's. I even told the PR dept, and no one inquired about it. A simple name tag and I would have returned it to the rightful owner.

->> Not a sports or gear topic, but... As a martial arts instructor for children... I must say, if you wish to label your children's things, it's best to put initials, not names... And YOUR contact number.

Names on shirts and clothing, and bags make it very easy for Mr/Mrs Perv to ID your child by name, thus potentially gaining the child's trust... Just my .02ยข... Always tell your children never to go with some one they don't know, even if they know there name.

And just because your 10yo knows a little karate, does not men they can defend them selves... get over your self.
