canon 300L f4 IS lens for hockey?

->> I already have the 70-200 f2.8 IS lens and would like a longer lens. I would love the 300 2.8 version but don't really want to spend 3-4000 just now. I have heard that the f4 doesn't focus fast enough for sports like hockey but would like to hear from photographers who have used this lens.

->> I would buy a 1.4 extender to hold you over until you can afford the 300 f/2.8. You can spend the money for the 300 f/4 now, but you will probably regret it later. That being said, the extender will turn your 70-200 f/2.8 into a 100-280 f/4, which is too dark for most hockey arenas.

->> Are you using strobes? If yes, then yes get it..otherwise dont plan on freezing any action with it. I had one and really only used it for faceoff and closeup(non-action) shots...and some action in the brighter arenas. As you may know, hocey needs at least 1/500th to freeze most action...
Good luck!

->> I used the 300 f4L IS as a back up lens when I covered the world juniors this year. It was held at scotia bank place which is well lit by arena standards. I used it mostly when I was forced to shoot overhead because there were no ice level positions left, and from time to time to shoot down ice depending on my position... IMO you need to be shooting in a very well lit rink (NHL) to use this lens, most others (AHL, OHL etc) are not bright enough if you are shooting available light. Also because it is an f4 the AF is not as accurate as a 2.8...

->> Thank you for your information. I think I will probably wait till I can afford the 2.8 version. A lot of rinks I shoot at are not that well lit and I would probably not be entirely satisfied with the results. I shot at the World Junior U18 championships in Fargo this past week and the Urban Plains Center has terrific lighting. Oh to have that kind of lighting in all rinks.
