| ->> Oh come on, the officer just "overreacted!" If he overreacted any further the reporter and photog would have been shot for resisting arrest.. I did like how the officer jumped the fence at the reporter when there was a bystander, gawking, practically next to the actual scene looking on.. But the officer went after the reporter! Really sad!! |

->> Hey, I give credit to the El Paso PD, who at least as soon as this guy showed up at the substation with the reporter, let him go, dropped the charges, and put Sgt. Bonehead on desk duty. As we have seen in other towns, it is too easy to start the "CYA," process. This sends a clear message to the other LE working in the dept.
DISCLOSURE: I have a relative who works at EPPD. |

->> The chief did a pretty nice job of balancing his duty to support his officers while also being pretty clear that the incident was a problem.
I'm not sure I would call the officer "out of control", he was applying his training as far as controlling a situation pretty well, unfortunately for him he was WRONG!
Had the TV crew been all alone by the side of the road, they would have less grounds to remain there, but as the officer singled them out when the side of the road was crowded with bystanders ... by singling out the TV crew he crossed the line.
Hopefully the chief will use this as a chance to better educate his department. |

| ->> yeah, and hopefully the reporters will take legal action against the cop and department so they will learn they can't treat people this way. |

| ->> On a positive note, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has twice yearly meetings with area photojournalists to air any issues or complaints. We have the PIO's direct phone number and cell number if we ever have a problem in the field. They also keep us updated as to who the after hours PIO is and their cell number. The last meeting I went to the Sgt. said, "We want to be held accountable for our actions." They also actively educate the police officers as to our rights as members of the media, try to get them to understand that we need to get our shots and to keep that in mind when setting up a media area at an event. |

->> Not only that but where was the Officers required DOT vest? As a firefighter the new DOT law requires anyone on the scene to have a DOT vest. That mean Cops, Firefighter and such.
While its sad this happened it does happen. I've seen it first hand before. This doesn't really shock me how the cop handled this.
Is it wrong? Yes..but not shocking. |

->> OK...first off...the cop went WAAAYYY to far, but I will point out something.
1. This clearly is not the whole scene. It starts off with the cop saying, "I'm not telling you again..." So who knows what transpired before he hops the fence.
2. No one who was on the left breakdown lane should have been there, but lets face it, a news truck is going to increase rubber-necking.
3. The news crew knew they shoulnd't be there, just as all the onlookers did.
4. The reporter didn't help matters with his "he can shoot if he wants to" remark
All that being said, the police officer probably started off on firm legal ground and the whole thing just deteriorated from there. Once it got to the point of putting hands on people, he was out of line.
Bottom line for the cop, there really is no true charge for "contempt of cop" no matter how much we would like there to be. There is a professional way to clear a scene to keep traffic moving safely. Even though the news crew was grimacing, they were leaving. He should have shut up and moved everyone else along. He didn't, he overreacted, he was wrong and now he is losing 11 days for it. |

| ->> If you read the follow up story you'll note the Officer involved in the incident is now at the rank of Officer, not Sgt, due to his actions in an unrelated incident. |

->> IMHO, both sides were wrong here!!
The Cop Overreacted, and it seems he had done that before:
"After the board's findings last Thursday, Police Chief Greg Allen suspended Ramirez, who is now an officer after being demoted from sergeant in an unrelated case."
This guy seems to have Pissed off someone else and he got Demoted!!
OTOH:
"Hunt declined to comment. Dupont has since left KVIA to pursue other opportunities."
"to pursue other opportunities"?????
That sounds like someone got Canned!!
In these altercations there is always three sides to the story, one side, the other side and THE RIGHT SIDE!!!
Can we please see ALL THE RAW Footage of the incident??
I don't think so!!
Being a Journalist doesn't give anyone the right to ignore or disobey the law, and the first amendment doesn't say so!!
This Cop OTOH needs some extra training!! Or he needs to evaluate his Job Opportunities, maybe a Drive through Clerk at his local McDonnald's .
OK, I feel better now!! |
