Chimera Speed Ring for Flash
Andrew Nelles, Photographer

->> I've been using this speed ring for my Chimera soft box for a year or so

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/13778-REG/Chimera_2790_Speed_Ring_for...

However, I'm tired of the plastic design, the threaded brass insert, that screws onto the lightstand hardware keeps ripping out of the plastic. I'm tired of gluing this thing back together. Anyone know of a better speed ring option for using a shoe mount flash?

Thanks.

->> plume makes a metal speedring, but you'll have to take it to a machine shop to get a thread bored out.

->> Andrew,
Try a better method of reattachment. Instead of dousing the inserts with superglue, move into epoxy. I know a lot of folks (myself included) are fond of JB Weld. Less than $10 at a hardware or auto supply store.

I just did a quick search for the Plume speedrings. That's what we use at work for our dynalites, but I don't see anything that would work for a shoe mount flash.

->> Have a look at this one from Photoflex (I own three and they are all metal):

If your Chimera speed ring has 1/4 or 3/8th inch threads on it, you can screw this bracket directly to that. If those threads are what you claim are stripping out, then get a metal speedring like this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/106602-REG/Photoflex_SC800SC_Speed_Ri...

Your Chimera rods will fit in here just fine.

If you don't already have an umbrella bracket, you'll need one to mount the "shoe mount connector".

That umbrella bracket also comes with a shoe mount, but you won't need it. Your flash will mount onto the Photoflex deal.

->> I use the Aluminuim Chimera Quick Release Speedrings

Works great and has a 1/4 -20 thread, to use a shoe mount strobe all you need is the photoflex adapter.

Unfortunately I can't say more. But it is worth the wait.
