->> I have the Nikon Scanner and was using Nikon Scan 4 on my Mac G5
I have the new Intel Mac using 10.5.6 and it won't work. I tried to download an update and it didn't work. (I downloaded the updated software and it came over as a SIT file which did not open)
Does anyone know what I can do to get the scanner to work on the new Mac?
Thanks

->> Hi Deb:
The problem is that the Nikon software is PPC and it runs in Rosetta (emulation mode). You might be able to run Nikon Scan Software by itself, but the plug-in will not work in PhotoShop. My solution has been to use VueScan software. It will not work through PhotoShop either (as a plug-in), but it is a Universal application (runs natively on PPC or Intel Macs).

Another is SilverFast which is scanner specific.

I use VueScan because it works with my Canon flatbed and my Nikon CoolScan IV. The developer updates regularly and I am able to get scans better than I ever got with the Nikon Software.
Try each as a free trial!
Nikon may never update their software for Intel! |

->> Rich,
I downloaded VueScan and I can hear the scanner working but it won't open the preview-it keeps showing me their photo.
Any idea what I am doing wrong? I have gone thru every setting-I hear the scanner going but no images of mine is opening. |

->> Only advice I can give is their online user guide.

It will be a different experience than the Nikon software, but the images will be great. It takes some tweaking to get things just right. |

->> HI Deb
My 9000 works with the latrest software in 10.5.6. Sometimes the nikon tech support though tough to get through too can be very helpful. I would suggest you disconnect any other firewire devices on your computer. Nikon scanners are very finnicky that way. David |

->> David,
any chance you have a ink to the latest software? What I found did not work
Are you on a new Mac? |

->> Deb: I don't know if you downloaded the update, but there is a 4.02 update on the same download site.

Nikon say's 10.5 is not officially supported. As I said, I gave up trying to use Nikon Scan when I switched to Intel Macs and PhotoShop CS3.
Also try SilverFast. These are the best solutions- VueScan, SilverFast. |

->> Hi Deb:
This IS one more solution. "If" you run PhotoShop CS2 or CS1, it will open automatically in Rosetta and the Nikon Scan plug-in will show up and will work. If you have CS3 or CS4, you can Make it open in Rosetta by finding the CS3/CS4 Application and doing a "Get Info". There you will see a checkbox that says "Open Using Rosetta". This will force PhotoShop to open in PPC emulation (Rosetta) and all the PPC plug-ins will show up and "should" work! I can confirm this works with CS3, I have not tried it with CS4.
FYI, CS3 and 4 are Universal applications designed to run natively on Intel and PPC machines. CS1 and 2 are designed to run natively on PPCs only. They will run fine on most Intel machines, but it requires using Rosetta emulation (built-in to OSX). This emulation requires extra resources but allows you to run older programs on your new Intel machine.
This can be useful if you have older plug-ins that are not fully compatible when running in Intel/Universal mode. Be sure to uncheck the box when you are done, so you can run at full speed next time around.
I still prefer VueScan. |

->> Hi Deb:
If you downloaded Stuffit, make sure you also run the installer. If you did that, you might want to restart the computer. If that fails, email me and I can send you the file in Zipped form (one that your Mac can open already).

->> Okay, I tried to open the standalone Nikon Scan 4 and it kept quitting. The problem was bad preferences!
Here is what I did to fix the problem. I opened Users/myaccountname/Library/Preferences/Nikon
I removed the two following preference files and put them in the Trash.
Nikon Scan 4 Prefs.lock
Nikon Scan 4 Prefs
Once I did that, Nikon Scan opened without a hitch! |

->> HI Deb
Call nikon tech support. They probably will not charge you just have your serial # ready on the back of your scanner. |

->> does Silver Fast have Digital Ice? I am trying their demo and I don't see it
Also-I don't see where you can crop an image before scanning it, as I was able to do with the Nikon Software
Before I purchase this I want to know if these 2 functions are available?
Thanks |

->> Hi Deb:
I use VueScan- I would encourage you to visit their web site and click on Support. Look in FAQs as well.
Best wishes,
Rich
FWIW, I was very disappointed to see Nikon stop updating their software for their scanners. The last update for Nikon Scan 4 was 2004! |

->> Be sure you aren't running other software for the scanner at the same time- try restarting the computer. Sometimes some software lays claim to a device and won't relinquish it to other software. A restart is sometimes the only cure.
Too bad I don't live nearby- I would certainly help you! |
