How many people have a waterproof compact?

->> How many folks here have a waterproof compact camera for either work or personal use such as the Pentax Optio series, and Olympus SW/Tough series. For a long time, Pentax and Oly were the only players, but now Panasonic and Canon have also jumped into the pool, as it were, with models launched earlier this year...
Yes, yes, small chips, lack of RAW, blah, blah, blah, but there's something to be said for a slim camera that fits into a velcro pocket of swim trunks for swimming, snorkeling, jet-skiing and other aquatic adventures, isn't there?
Anyone done any cool projects with a pocket swim camera?
For me, I now can't imagine not having a submersible camera with me on all warm-water vacations, as well as ski and snow trips. Anyone else here digging this breed of amphibious compacts? |

->> I have a Pentax Optio which I bought a few years ago. I haven't done anything I can call "project" with it. But I've swum with it at the La Jolla Cove (San Diego) a few times just for fun.
The best part for me is you don't have to worry about spilling coffee or something over it, not so much about being able to take it to the water.

| ->> I have waterhousings for both my G10 and SD1000. I would rather have the new Canon than the SD1000 and housing. |

->> Yeah I have had an Olympus for a few years now, it's documented many life experiences where I wouldn't have brought a "real" camera including: my daugther's first time in a swimming pool (it actually shoots quite nicely underwater), a kayaking trip, and numerous ski trips.
The Olympus doesn't let you control apertures or shutter speeds but it does have numerous "profiles" (for lack of a better word) that allow it to take reasonable pictures in a variety of conditions. |

->> Our old Canon SD450 has an underwater housing. That thing has been through quite a bit. SPTS changed out the ring twice. Great way to get shots near, on, or under water.
I ordered an underwater case for my G10 just today, actually. (It seems the 450 is being turned over to my son) |

| ->> I have an Olympus 770SW. Bought it because I needed a durable compact and had a buddy "certify" it as "Marine proof." I figured if my buddy breaks a cell phone every 4-6 months then the P&S that lasted him 2 recon tours in Iraq and is still going should be durable. It's sturdy, takes great photos, is fun to use and I've used it for work a few times. Nothing I'd call a project though. |

| ->> My husband and I are avid kayakers, we even built our own boats. We have 2 pentax optios (w10&W20) I've been very pleased with the image quality and they are certainly durable. We just keep them clipped to our PFD's with a safety line. Sometimes I'll look down and find it just dragging in the water. We use to have just one but I got tired of our trip photos looking like I wasn't there, so now my husband has his own so I can at least be in one or two photos. :) |

| ->> I have a PowerShot S70 that also shoots raw with the waterproof housing from Canon. It works nicely and of course takes video with sound! |

->> I saw the Olympus version at a local Best Buy, very interesting waterproof to 33 feet or somthing like that also good to 17 degrees F, but probally not both at the same time. Definely targeted to the outdoors active set and also good for up to a 6 ft drop according to marketing... might have to pick one of those up.

->> Have you seen these new GoPro cameras? They are pretty cool and shoot both video and stills and a waterhousing to boot!
Check out the site: http://www.goprocamera.com/
I am taking a few on a surf trip to Indonesia next week and can't wait to see what we come up with. |
