i thought the photos were excellent. But then I realized that I wasn't thinking about how terrible the story was, and instead was thinking "how did he capture that perfect audio and get those great images in the middle of a firefight?"
I hope I'm not actually so desensitized. Or if i am, I hope the general public isn't. However, even though I thought the writing of the accompanying article was a bit confusing, it did have me tearing up at the end. |

->> A colleague of mine recommended I check this out yesterday morning. Awesome stills by Hicks as always. Many kudos to him for his composure during such a harrowing experience. I know I wouldn't be able to do that. With about 80% of my work being documentary video storytelling I couldn't help but think how much more compelling this could have been if it were video. I think watching those soldiers run for cover, return fire, and mourn the loss of their friend in their bewildered state would have been better told with video.
My colleagues and I dialogue often about the efficacy of stills/multimedia vs video for a given story. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the use of stills and audio for this particular story. |
