WordPress Blog Themes For Photography

->> So - I've never had a blog before, and now I'll be starting a couple - on Word Press.
I noticed in the Manage Themes section under my account there are 5 pages of options. I ran a google search for "best wordpress themes for photos" and found this: http://www.bestwpthemes.com/ - it even has a section devoted to Photos -- some free, some you have to buy -- I know nothing about that site -- seems like its an independent company outside WordPress creating themes compatible with WordPress, right?
I realize it can come down to personal preference, style, choice ect...
But I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or experience with a given theme/template that they liked or disliked?
something with easy navigation and shows photos well...
It will be a Photo Blog with minimal text (captions, small write-up) - so photo viewing and navigation/layout is the main focus. Its for a wedding photography company -- I'll have a personal one too -- but mostly interested in a good one for weddings... but will not be used as a portfolio or main site - but as a compliment to our main site...
Thanks |

| ->> I'm actually leaning toward Drupal as a vehicle at this point over Wordpress. It allows much more flexibility with content display and allows the marketing aspects of your business to be featured much more prominently. Just my two cents worth. |

->> Will you be using wordpress.com or will you be downloading wordpress and installing it to your own server?
hope all is well -

->> Jean why do you feel that drupal allows more flexibility with content display? If it's CSS and PHP determining how content is displayed in both drupal and wordpress then how would one be more flexible then the other?
Just curious?

->> Thomas,
I also just started a blog at http://www.drockphoto.com and it uses Wordpress. The theme is from ProPhoto Blogs, which can be found at http://www.prophotoblogs.com/
What I like about this is that it allows for large pictures, lots of customization and is used by a lot of wedding photographers as their primary site or blog. It provides right-click protection and an array of other options. Took me a few days to get a full grip on all the stuff you can do. It also gives you the option to have a rotating banner/logo/masthead at the top if you want and I have that utilized on mine, but the layout option I have is one of about 10 different options.
It's a little pricey compared to other WordPress themes at $179 if you decide to do all the installation of Wordpress and the Theme yourself (it's not hard at all), but well worth it for the options they provide and the look.
One cool thing to check out on their blogs or my blog as an example is the "About Me" and "Contact" links. When clicking on those, the space where you read information about the photographer or input contact information drops out of the menu. Sounds weird, but you have to see it to understand what I'm saying.
With the purchase of the blog, you get to use the theme twice. One for business purposes and the other for a non-commercial purpose.
I'm not a spokesman for the company nor do I know anyone who works there, but I've liked the blog so much and it seems to jive with what you are looking for that I got carried away in my description of what it does.
Good luck! |

->> Chris - as of right now I'll just be using WordPress.com, I just signed up and got the blogname.wordpress.com -- still at the early stages of putting it all together, may change in the future...
Derek -- thanks for all the info -I'll definitely check it out! |

->> Sorry Thomas alot of that was about wordpress.org. It depends on your blog/sites intended goal, but wordpress.org will allow for much more customization and potentially better seo.
However for wordpress.com the theme that has consistently impressed me for photo-driven blogs is which ever one Scott Strazzante is using. I imagine that you can email him through his sportsshooter page or the blog itself too inquire about what theme it is.

Hope all is well and good luck -

->> Chris -- thanks a lot - that is very helpful! wow - I must be an idiot! I didn't realize the wordpress.com/wordpress.org split.
so it sounds as if I'm stuck with whatever templates they provide at .com and can't go to outside creators, if I have that right...??
if thats the case, the I may switch over to the .org account so I upload other templates... |

->> I would highly recommend going the .org route. You can set up and run multiple blogs very easily and for incredibly cheap with a service like
http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net
then you will have the use of the whole world of wordpress, not just the small portion they put up on the .com site to compete with blogger.
good luck and happy development. |
