->> I recently joined Twitter and was amazed to see that Ashton Kutcher was able to amass 1 million followers before CNN. Each were "tweeting" and using all their resources to win the friendly bet for charity. I found myself watching Ashton's live feed from his house and it was fascinating.

->> The crazy thing is that Ashton Kutcher has more followers than most newspapers have subscribers.
So in a single tweet, he can inform more people than dozens of newspapers combined.
The power of direct marketing is really amazing and has significant implications for media.
Instead of advertising in papers, magazines and TV his next movie, he can just tweet about it, save hundreds of thousands and reach more people. |

->> I still don't understand stand why twitter is so big? What is the purpose of it? Isn't it just text messaging but onto a website instead of someones cell phone?
Why "twit"?
Confused and feeling old... |

->> It's not really text messaging, which is (normally) communications between single users. Twitter broadcasts the same short messages to anyone and everyone who is connected to the user's "feed". It is very similar to the Status Update feature in Facebook.
I'm near the middle of Twitter's targeted age demographic and I don't really understand why it has caught on like it has. There's nothing quite like feeling "old" and "out of it" at age nineteen! |

->> Matthew,
Why Twitter?
Marketing. I found Twitter useless until not to long ago when I realized it had marketing potential. I do not use Twitter for photography, but for travel info and relaying into that is useful to travelers and travelling photogs.
Since I made the shift in how I use Twitter in the past two weeks I have picked up about 100 followers per week (not that many by many accounts, but I have more followers than quite a few airlines on Twitter). Also, through Twitter I have found a few potential consulting positions from places that found me directly on Twitter, from Twitter they found Flying With Fish ... and from Flying With Fish they found The Travel Strategist.
So why use Twitter? Because it can be a marketing tool. Not only do followers read your posts, but non-followers can read your posts as well. This opens up a wider potential audience. With text messaging a phone you'll never come even close to that exposure potential. |

->> Is it a bad thing if you don't know who Ashton Kutcher is? Not entirely , no, but I wouldn't pride myself on it.
Actively trying to "stay above" something is an attitude that eventually begets ignorance. One has to try pretty hard to not know who Ashton Kutcher is, and I would wager that this active non participation in society at large will eventually lead one to be out of touch.
I don't really find it surprising that Ashton reached 1 million followers before CNN, because Ashton is a very smart and savvy business person who proves time and time again that he can take a simple idea, stay in front of it and make it work. Because Ashton embraces new things, he is rewarded by this vast (and extremely valuable) following.
This above it all attitude is the type of thinking that most news outlets are guilty of, and is the reason why its not hard for a person like myself to have almost 50% more people following me on twitter than a certain major newspaper in my homestate. |

->> The big thing that makes Twitter so successful is that unlike Facebook and other social networking sites, it is not a walled garden. You can interact with anybody on Twitter, regardless of whether they are following you are not. I can search for photographer and see if anybody uses that search term and respond to them.
It is not texting. It is not just for your friends.
If you are a photographer with a website, it can be a great tool to funnel traffic and increase your site's SEO - search engine optimization.
You can market stuff on it, but if you are spammy, you can get kicked off twitter and users can block your "tweets".
Ashton Kutcher, with the help of some very forward thinking tech savy friends, has embraced the new media. He is constantly live-streaming video, taking photos and discussing important topics. That is why he has over one million followers, not just because he is a semi-famous actor.
