->> Saw an interview with Brian Ulrich on Chicagoist http://tinyurl.com/d2l96q. Ulrich is a photog who's been working on a longterm project about consumerism, big box stores etc. He just recently won a Guggenheim grant to continue his project.

Talking about shooting in stores, getting hassled (as we all have) by security, parents etc about taking photos he has the best reasoning I think I've heard.

"there's a crazy suspicion and distrust -- among security, police, parents -- of what the intentions of the other person on the other side of the lens will be. The one thing that ticks me off is when they hand you Sept. 11 stuff. If you're a terrorist, then wouldn't it be easier to use Google Earth than set up a camera with a tripod to take a 15-minute exposure? Seems like a really dumb way to scout out a place."

It's a little long but I think I'm going to Cafepress to get a shirt with this on it.

->> You want to see something interesting? Go to Google Earth and put in Los Alamos National Labs. This is the place where the highest level nuclear weapon research is going on and you can tell if there are cars parked in lots around buildings.

And to think folks are worried about someone taking pictures of a BestBuy.

->> You should see what happens when I take pictures on post. Half the MPs (military police) and residents instantly identify any photographic activity with their basic terrorism prevention training (bad guys taking intel photos of targets)... never mind that I'm a CAC-carrying, dog tags wearing member of the United States Army.

*sigh*
