->> Yesterday I wrote about driving over my Pelican 1514 case with a Chevy 1500 series pickup truck. Well some people were not satisfied that a pick up driving over my case twice was really an 'impact test.' So this morning I loaded up the case and threw it off of the second floor deck of my house...roughly double the height baggage would fall if it fell from the cargo door of a Boeing 737 or Airbus A320.
So how can a Pelican 1514 protect the contents flying through the air, bouncing and rolling? Lets find out...

You really don't want me singing. That alone could have cracked up my gear. |

->> Matthias,
I decided against laying asphalt in the front yard for the the impact test. Aside from cost, the time involved and getting proper zoning was just to much of a headache. So I decided to just throw it onto the ground below, whichis quite solid, since it is also my driveway (I have no paved driveway) |

->> Let's see ... what other variables can we dream up to invalidate the test? Wind gusts? Zoysia vs. bluegrass on the lawn? Possible settling of the house on its foundation that might have reduced the altitude by an inch or so? Maybe the lift potential of an airborne case?
I say stamp "ACME" on the side of it, create a round hole on the lawn with black paint, then drop it and see if it falls through to China. |

->> JC,
Interesting concept for knocking the MkIII into alignment. Unfortunately I packed the case well and the gear sustained no damage...while the MkIII would not some damage to make the focus properly. |

Hope you get some extra traffic to your blog out of this and who knows maybe even a Pelican Case sponsorship! |

What you want is an 85f1.8...it might have been in the case (and it is in perfect working condition attached to a 20D sitting on my desk) |

->> Witte,
I couldn't get the permit to pave the lawn and my wife wouldn't let me chain the house to the back of my car and drag it 10 ft closer to the street.
But since the drop is nearly double that of a fall from the cargo area of a 737 or A320 I figure that makes up for a lower drop onto pavement. The ground out front is pretty damn solid. |

->> I think the reliability of the test has been comprised, in large part from the empirical evidence presented as pictures. Pictures without the song "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor" being played, when bodies are in fact hitting the floor (ground). How am I to believe this test when such a massive flaw exists in the testing phase of the research?
Other music that will increase the validity of this test: any song ever used in an 80's montage... |

->> Bastian,
Why park the truck when you can completely drive over it? Did they have anything in that case? (and I didn't have access to a Ford Excursion).
...and now I am NOT going to take Pelican case loaded with my gear and shoot it with a shot gun! That is pretty much where I draw the line. |

->> The shotgun was hokey. #6 or #8 shot is a wimpy test at the apparent distance.
Let's get real - us a 44 mag, or even a .22 at that distance. It will penetrate. A scatter gun just, well - scatters. If they had it full of gear, it wouldn't have even tipped over.
So, in relation to that test by the manufacture, I think Fish's test is far more convincing. I still cringe at him dumping several thousand $$ worth of perfectly good Canon gear our his 2nd story window.
Fish, I hope you find more work soon. |

I could have used my F3hp w/MD-4, FA w/MD-15, 18f3.5 Ai-S, 35f1.4 Ai-S, 50f1.4 AI 85f2 AI and 180f2.8 AI...but really how much of a test would that be? I'm pretty sure all that gear could survive without being in a Pelican case. |
