->> Since it has been over a decade since the Bulls and the Balckhawks have been in the playoffs at the same time, the Chicago Tribune has given me a fun assignment.
On Saturday. April 18th, I will be jetting off to Boston to shoot the Chicago Bulls' opening playoff game against the Celtics at 12:30pm. Once the contest is finished, I will be flying back to Chicago in time for the 8pm start of game two of the Blackhawks' playoff series against the Calgary Flames.
I will be sending photos and audio commentary along the way as I make my journey to Bean Town and back.
If you have nothing else to do and want to check on my progress, stop by www.chicagotribune.com. |

| ->> Hey Scott, I envy you, but not the long day you had. I am curious, are you the only staffer at the paper now? That sounds like something I would have to do at my job because I AM the only photographer here. J |

->> Scott,
I checked out all 64 pictures in the gallery, but what was the purpose? You did a fine job. But I'm sure the company paid you overtime, the flight, cab rides, meals. Isn't the Tribune Company in Bankruptcy protection?
I am all about traveling for work. I do it a bit, but this to me seems like a waste of your time and talent. Besides aren't there other staff photographers shooting these games?
I guess what I really don't get is the assignment itself. Were the editors trying to prove that "you are" Superman?
Are they trying to drive traffic to the website? Are you doing this again?
I don't mean any disrespect or anything like that. I'm just curious about why this was done?
Be well and good luck on your travels -

->> Armando, no disrespect taken.
The trip was the idea of Chicago Tribune sports editor Mike Kellams. I got a call on Thursday asking if I wanted to shoot both games and I agreed. The original plan was for me to Twitter my way through the day but it ended up being a photo/audio journal.
My belief is that the reasoning is twofold.
One is to drive traffic to the website. (The feature was by far the most viewed thing on the sports page)
The other reason is that the newspaper is trying to turn some of its staff members into "personalities" and not just names on the top of stories or bottom of photographs. Scarily, my mug was in the paper 4 times over Saturday and Sunday.
We don't have much of a budget so I don't think we will be traveling with the Bulls or Hawks unless of course they advance to the conference finals or maybe the league finals.
As for a waste of my time. I disagree there. I was the only shooter at the Bulls' game and was the second shooter at the Hawks game, just in case that I didn't make it back to Chicago on time. I think that I provided a pretty good report from both games and the newspaper gave the photos a pretty good ride.
As for the workload, it wasn't much different than an average day at the Olympics.
I highly doubt that we would do it again but it was a good experience.
Thanks for the questions. |

->> Scott,
Actually I thought it may have something to do with viral marketing, and twitter and traffic to the website. Becoming personalities in a community certainly can't hurt. It puts a human element to the "media."
I thought perhaps there was another shooter at the Bulls game too. Back in the day (2 to 3 years ago) that would have been the case. I too agree that you did a fine job covering both games, my comment of wasting your time was more in kind with the workload itself and having other photographers covering either game.
Nonetheless, it was an imaginative way of reporting the games in this new world.
Thanks for your answers.
