Modifying (entending) back focus button (Canon)

->> Just wanted to share with all you back focus button shooters something I'm experimenting with. I shoot a Mark IIn, but I think all bodies are pretty much the same. After several hours of shooting, especially in colder weather, that button gets very difficult to push! I've been trying to think of something to "add on" to that button and finally came up with an idea yesterday. The little Finger Point pads on laptops seemed like they would be about the same size as the back button...and they are!
My first glue I tried didn't stick too well....about 8 presses of the button. I have my 2nd attempt drying now and will test it out tonight.
I didn't find any results of others trying anything, but I can't imagine I am the first one to try this??? Let me know any thoughts you have!

->> Tyson! I'm interested in this. Please update if it works. My fat thumb barely can make the buttons work as it is!

| ->> This is a real problem if you are like me and think that pressing the button harder will speed up the focusing. |

->> I have enough problems with my lens back focusing. Why would I want to encourage it? [grin]
I use a back focus button on my 1D, and will be using it on the 30D when it comes back from getting a new shutter.
I really miss not being able to do that on the Rebel XT that is filling in while the 30D is 'out of service.'
And Jeff, I've also tried that press harder thing, and it doesn't get faster for me either. |

->> Ok, well this is still a work-in-progress. The finger point pad turned out to be too big, my camera strap hanging over, or the brim of my bucket hat kept hitting that focus button. I think I will try and cut it in half (height) and see if that works. Otherwise, there's a reason those button's on our camera bodies are that small! (grin)
It sure was nice to use when it was working though! And super glue really really does hold, that wasn't a problem at all...getting it off took some prying. I thought I was going to putt the button right out of the camera!
Stay tuned, or experiment yourself and report back here please! :-) |

->> I've actually had this in the back of my mind ever since making the switch from Nikon several years ago. Do really miss that larger AF button on the back of the Nikons. Anyway, I've been thinking of something more mushroomed-shaped and low profile. The "stem" of the mushroom would actually adhere to the existing button and the "cap" would give you a bit more surface area to push.
In addition to missing shots due to a numb thumb, pushing that tiny AF button in the cold can feel like a needle being driven into your thumb! |

| ->> Whatever you do, don't try screwing anything into the center of the button. I did that once trying to build one up. It just messes the button up and breaks off the contact for the electronics inside. |

->> A couple of thoughts.
I have had some success with the felt adhesive pads that you stick on the bottom of chair legs to protect the floor. They already have adhesive on them, and they can be cut to size.
After shooting the first 200K images with my MarkIIN, when I had the shutter replaced, I also had Canon service replace the circuit board with those buttons on it. The button extends out more that it had after using it for back focus for two years. |
