->> First from the AP -John Madden has retired. Possibly related to the cost of fueling the Madden Cruiser?
Second - AP by way of John Harrington. The AP is now the NFL's photo licensing arm, replacing Getty. Will the AP add freelance help, hire underemployed Getty folks, or try and "wing it?" |

->> I am going to miss John Madden. I grew up first hearing about him winning with the Raiders a long, long time ago and then hearing his voice with Pat Summeral calling the great 49ers/Cowboys playoff games in the early 90's along with other Fox games.
What I am going to miss most of all is his voice on all the Madden video games if they replace him there. He actually was replaced by Chris Collinsworth on the last issue of the game but voiced other parts of the game. I have every one from '91 to the current one crossing over four different systems and hope they continue with his name as the title of the game.

| ->> As a former football ball player I have been waiting happily for this day to come concerning his retirement. Man he might be the most annoying announcer ever! He babbles about nothing all game long. (JMPO) |

| ->> Agreed! Farewell, good riddance, adios, etc. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Mr. Madden. John Madden and Larry Merchant have to be the most annoying and nonsensical sportscasters to ever roam the earth! |

->> If you want endless dribble, you need to turn your dial to MNF. I can't figure out 1 - why those guys make more than us, 2 - how they got their jobs, 3 - how they continue to get credentials. I WATCH MNF every week, but it's soundless.
Madden rules. |

So you are too young to remember Howard. |

->> Sacrilege!!!
John Madden will always be the voice of Monday Night Football.
The only other Voice that is as instantly recognizable and speaks football is the Voice of NFL Films Harry Kalas, who passed away recently. A piece of what is the NFL is gone with him. |

->> Not even close to be the most annoying. Most annoying is Joe Theismann
the guy will contradict himself mid sentence, after he announces how great he was. |

->> If you think Madden and Collinsworth are annoying? Try living here in the DC area and tuning into ESPN 980 during the day. The local guys are the worst. From "The Locker Room" to "The John Thompson Show" to "The Sports Reporters". The most annoying thing to listen to is after a "Skins" win and you would think they won the Super Bowl, but tune in after a loss. These guys are talking so low (whispering) you would think they were reporting from the 18th at Augusta. I miss my XM Radio...

->> I think Madden kind of got to be his own stereotype and it eventually got a little bothersome, I'm just glad I usually am shooting and NFL game on Sundays and don't have to hear the announcers. I can't watch any of the studio pregame shows as I find all those guys trying to be so jocular some of the most annoying anything on the planet.
But Madden was a great coach and back in the day when you could have a satellite dish that got the game feed directly from the stadium without commercials, I would watch Madden work during the time regular folks were watching commercials. Other announcers would watch a replay a few times and then do their telestrator thing. Madden would do all of his drawing on the screen without even seeing a replay and would nail it every time. The guy really knows his football.
I think that is what set him apart from many of the other former players/coaches who are now announcers. He really knew every aspect of the game and that showed through in his commentary. |

->> My vote goes to Jerry Glanville, but it is more of an entertainment vote. I have the "NFL Sunday Ticket" package from DirecTV and several years ago I used to click over to the Atlanta Falcons games sometimes just to hear a few minutes of Glanville.
I will miss Madden, and I hope that they do not give the job to Dennis Miller :) |

| ->> One thing that can be said for Madden is that he knows his stuff, From coaching to broadcasting, he has always been one of the most knowledgeable sportscasters around. Annoying as he may be, he towers over the line of ex-athlete turned sportscasters like Collinsworth and Aikman. |
