Nine kids and she is the youngest who took care of her parents. Oh yeah, she has the learning disability yet she still became the caregiver of her parents. Ms. Boyle deserves every bit of success she receives as she is definately well overdue. |

->> There is another good one from this same show, and the guy has an amazing voice. His name is Paul Potts and he performed an opera piece (Nessun Dorma) that drew a reaction from the judges very similar to Ms. Boyle's performance. The Potts performance is also easy to find on YouTube, and having seen him and now Ms. Boyle I find them equally inspiring.
It is really great when someone who does not "fit the mold" of a professional singer walks out onto the stage and blows people right out of their chairs.
It is nice to be surprised in a GOOD way once in a while :) |

Nope, but please post your recipe.
Seriously folks, this whole thing is nothing more than a ploy by the TV show to garner ratings. To think that there was any "surprise" about this woman's singing is absurd, as is any thought that they couldn't have convinced her to undergo a little make-over before putting her on stage. Simon Cowell (the man behind a lot of today's crappy "reality" television) is playing you like a cheap guitar.
Do you think that there would have been any publicity if it had been a dishy blond with the same voice? |

->> Ploy or not, it's a great "story". Please don't think that I am naive enough to think that everything on TV is "real" even when stated as such. Susan Boyle's "story", even if it was concocted by Simon Cowell in his devious imagination, is a "story" of the triumph of the will (she sang what song from what opera?). I go to movies to see the same thing. I read books to get the same message. I am moved to tears whether it is fact or fiction.
Whether or not I am a cheap guitar, her "story" struck a chord in my heart. |

->> Jim,
I have to say I thought the same thing when I first saw it; My first reaction was "No way; she's a shill" NO one could be that good and not be noticed. But, apparently, all is as it has been represented. Same for Paul Potts. I've always said to myself when I hear someone is the "Best singer, best athlete, best anything" that that only means they are the best of those that have decided to pursue it. Singing is one of those human capabilities that is a God-given talent, and you can be a world-class, pitch-perfect singer, and because you never pursued the career, it is entirely possible that someone working the night shift at 7-11 is better. So, here comes a show (soon to be in the US, BTW) that gives these average people an opportunity to be seen, and every now and then you get "surprised".
American Idol is different, in that there is an age limit, you can't sing opera, and what with all the nuts and crazies, and hundreds of thousands of idiots auditioning, true talent is put off stepping forward.
I don't see how, with all the scrutiny she's been under, that Susan Boyle can be a shill. If so, she's the best kept secret on the planet. And the moon landing was staged. |

I disagree. It's not a story unless and until you want to show how the world's media has been fooled into covering this lame-ass "event".
YMMV.
"...here comes a show (soon to be in the US, BTW) that gives these average people an opportunity to be seen..."
You've been conned. Average people don't have a chance on these shows. It's the closest thing we have to an old time carny freak show, available now on national TV.
If you want pathetic, why don't we just bring back "Queen For A Day"? |

However, the story is more interesting as presented than a hot bombshell. The visual contrasts from the audible. |

->> Jim,
Is this your belief or do you have proof that this is all contrived? Why are you so angry about it? I could understand the frustration if you KNEW it was made up, but unless you have evidence, concrete proof that the rest of the world has overlooked, then speak up. Otherwise, I would say, respectfully, your heated emotions are born out of what you believe to be true. If it is, it will come out in due time. The press loves to out someone who has pulled the wool over their eyes.
The media has not been fooled to cover the "event". The event exploded on the internet, the press covered the rapid spread of her popularity. Granted, they showed WHY she has become so popular, but the story would not be there if the 30 million hits on YouTube did not occur.
C'mon, where's your proof this is a scam? I'm on your side, because, as I have stated, that was my first impression as well. But after looking for and not finding any evidence of contrivance, I have to accept it's real. |

->> The first time I saw Susan Boyle, it wasn't becauses of Phil's post, it was the end of a segment on a news show. My initial impression was and still is "the woman has a voice like a angel". I knew nothing else; I assumed she was on American Idol - a program I don't watch. It was only when I watched YouTube that I realized what the rest of the story was.
Was it a set up? Maybe. The choice of the song was interesting to be sure. But here's the bottom line: The women can sing like a angel. How many people can sing like Susan Boyle? 7 or 8? 10? 20? 100? the answer is: Not many.
I saw Les Misérables on Broadway many years ago. Boyle's rendition was BETTER than what I saw LIVE. Assume it's all a set up, it doesn't matter if she can sing, does it?
Be cynical if that makes you feel better. Simon makes a bundle promoting Susan Boyle's career. Guess what - at least she gets one. We're all better off listening to that incredible voice. |

Contrary to the old saying, just because something is too good to be true doesn't mean that it isn't.
As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I don't really care about the alleged back story. The woman has an amazing voice. I was sufficiently entertained by that alone.
Even if the whole thing was concocted by Simon Cowell, I will still have been entertained.
