D3 - "err" message ???
Ken Charnock, Photographer

->> Shooting HS baseball tonight when the shutter stopped in the middle of a burst. Says err on the top display. I took the battery out, the shutter will go 1 at a time but not a burst - still shows err.

The display on top and in the viewfinder both show err - not the shutter speed / aperature?

I'm sending it to NPSi in NYC but in the meantime, any thoughts?

Thanks,

Ken

->> I had a very similar Error on my D300 a few months ago. It'll take one exposure at a time but not shoot burst right? And you can't adjust aperture, shutter, etc. without turning the camera off and on or hitting the DOF preview button, which resets the ERR message until you release the shutter again?

Couldn't find an answer for what it might have been, so I ended up just sending mine back to Nikon as well. Turn around was around two weeks, and they gave my D300 the full treatment, it was like getting back a new camera. Swapped out the shutter, the aperture mechanism, etc. etc... so I really have no clue what the problem ended up being, they just fixed it and that was it.

->> Blown shutter. Had this happen on a D2xs and same symptom on a friend's D200. In each case the cause was a bad shutter. The 1 at a time will eventually fail too. How many actuations on your D3?

->> I'm having the same symptoms with my D3 that Ken is describing. The thing is, it happens every time with the 24-70AFS, rarely (but has) with the 80-200, never with the 50 1.4 OR the 300 2.8 VR. I've cleaned the contacts on the lens, battery, etc...
It's time for a NPS trip, I know, but not understanding (if it's a shutter problem) why I can shoot with the 300 in burst with no err?

->> Eric I had a 28-70 afs that blew out 3 af modules on my bodies.... Each time the lens would work for a while then out of the blue a camera would fail and sure enough the 28-70 was on the body. Something in the lens would intermittently short and a body would pay the price. First 2 times I chalked it to coincidence #3 I just knew.

NPS sent a loaner D3

NPS entered it as a "C" repair ($421.00); replacing shutter, new rubber, clean/check. After several calls/emails to NPS and customer service they decided to comp the repair (stated that it was good customer relations).

I decided to go ahead and have the buffer upgrade completed while it was there.

Thanks NIKON.

->> I had the EXACT same problem. You'd think NIKON would realize maybe something is going on here! They charged me the $325 repair cost. Haven't gotten it back yet. I've had the camera a year.

->> Update:
Back from NPS in a week. Repaired the "aperture operation"
It was explained to me that the aperture mechanism involves small gears that probably had foreign matter hindering its function. Labor intensive repair.
NPS took care of the repair, probably due to the age (actually 15 months)of the camera and light use. I'm very pleased.
The ERR message seems to be generic and can mean many things.
Thanks NPS.
