Shooting for a CD Cover
Eric Jones, Photographer

->> I've been contacted by a local Christian band to shoot a portrait of the whole band for their new CD cover. Anything I need to keep in mind since the cover will be like all square and I don't want to forget anything or do I leave that part up to their graphics artist? We are shooting in on old warehouse with natural lighting coming from the top so they are looking at wide angle shot of the band which includes 8 members as well as few beams from the warehouse and ceiling. A lot to get in a photo so I want to keep things in mind when doing the shoot so it will work for a CD cover. I'm just not sure what I need to keep in mind. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks
Eric

->> Eric,

Work with the graphic artist so your collective contributions support each other and you images aren't butchered in favor of somebody else's vision.

->> Eric,

That is exactly what I would suggest (what the other Mark said). Plus, if possible, visit the supposed site before the shoot, so you can get a feel to what you are shooting before hand. Although they say natural light, find out what time of day the shoot is and visit the warehouse to see how the sun is actually coming through the roof because you may need a reflector or two. I doubt it, but you may even see a need for a scrim. You never know. You never want to show up somewhere unprepared and give the client the impression that you are lost. But I've seen your work on your member's page from time-to-time and you are an excellent photographer.

Please post your final work when you are finished if you don't mind. Have a GREAT shoot.....

->> We are actually going to do a test shoot today with one of my friends at noon as the main shoot is this Saturday to test out everything. Thanks for the feedback and I will get with the main band leader and talk to the artist that is going to design the cover.

Thanks
Eric

->> Eric,

I've done several CD covers. In each instance, though, the band and I worked together to come up with a design (we didn't use an outside graphic artist). I agree wholeheartedly with the advice from the two Marks. The time spent talking about the concept ahead of time, to come up with a concept we all could get behind, made all the difference in the world.

During the conversations, I hand-drew mockups to make sure we were on the same page, and it was surprising how many things I thought I understood about their ideas were clarified by working things through this way -- positioning, text overlays, graphic elements, etc. When it came time for the photoshoot, in each case I knew exactly what I wanted to capture, had set things up ahead of time to accomplish that, and it went smoothly. We got what we wanted quickly, then had time to experiment a bit and come up with alternate art elements that naturally grew out of the situation.

The whole thing was a lot of fun and was quite relaxed, due to the prior planning. In the end I was happy with the results, as was the band. I know that the preplanning was the key.
