Sunk too low part 2.

->> I would like to throw in my opinion.
Dave,
I work close to Phillip everyday at WKU, help him edit his work and have a good understanding of why we shoot what we do. I would first like to clear something up. Phillip did NOT go to spring break to party. In fact, these photos were not shot on his spring break, they were shot the week he returned from his break. He had been wanting to shoot an essay on spring break for a while, so he picked himself up and drove alone to the beach to cover a ritual that many high school and college students participate it and has been covered and exploited by MTV and many other outlets. Philip spent his spring break not on "vacation," but instead with me and other WKU students in Whitesburg, Ky. documenting the lives of people who live in rural Appalachia for the Appalachian Cultural project. That work can be seen at www.acpworkshop.org. I think this proves that Phillip understands doing stories that are worthy of being told. Phillip did this work on his own time, his own money, and his own resources. Not because he wanted to see drunk teens all week, but because he felt this was an important event to document. I think his images are tasteful and powerful. If seeing a picture of a group of drunk guys crowded around a half naked chick trying to grope her bothers anyone, then good. Maybe you'll think twice when your 15 yr old daughter says she's going to Panama City with some friends next summer. That's why its important.
BTW, the reason Phillip has not responded is probably because he just left yesterday to spend two weeks on another trip documenting a group of homeless travelers. Check out his website, theres some "worthy" images there.

->> Kohl,
Thanks for posting the links to Phillip's website and the Appalachian Cultural Project. Both were well worth my time tonight!! Very worthy images.
Thanks also for pointing out why his Spring Break images are important. Your reasoning, and Phillip's, are right on target. Those images are bothersome and we should be troubled by them.

->> Phillip's website proves the point I made a few posts ago. Had he posted the photos in the manner the rest of his work is displayed on his website (which is very professional), I don't think this thread would have ever been started.
Phillip---keep up the good work. |

->> I'll add my support to Phillip's essay. I admit at first I didn't check it out because I feared it was a T&A set (to quote Seinfeld: "not that there's anything wrong with that!").
But I'm glad I checked it out - I agree with what Amy Wallot said in the last thread. I found the images a bit disturbing and not titillating at all. However, others may disagree and saw something else - great!
While often I like no captions other than basic info about the setting, and let the reader make the decisions - I think a paragraph or two relating the Phillip's own thoughts would have made this even more interesting and perhaps shed light to those who thought it was nothing but T&A. |

| ->> I actually emailed him to request captions after I saw the photos. There's missing context because there are no captions. I like the photos, but I'd prefer to hear an explanation for the images. |

->> I usually dread a "Part 2" to any thread - the 50 post limit is there for a reason - but I was pleasantly surprised to read this.
Having said that, I think there have been plenty of "Informative"s, "Huh?"s, and "Inappropriate"s handed out over the course of this discussion. I hope Kohl's contribution brings closure to this topic.
Unfortunately, I suspect there will be a few itching to write "but you didn't get my point" posts to stir the pot. Please don't. |

->> What's the big deal?
If he doesn't think it's "professional" to photograph revelers at spring break then their are at least a few hundred photographers that have been making money (as staff or freelancers) for the past few decades that might want to dispute him on that.

->> I would just like to say that this has certainly spurred some unintended controversy. When I headed down to Florida I was only vaguely aware of what to expect. I was trying to make images that would accurately represent both what I saw and how I felt about this culture. As far as captions go, I have them up on my blog but I was a little rushed with my sports shooter update to add them. If you are interested you can find them at http://www.philipscottandrews.com/photoblog/?p=46
Thanks again for all of the insight and advice. I hope these discussions and debate can afford all of us a platform for growth in our field.
