Who is applying for EAW XXII ?
Rafael Agustin Delgado, Student/Intern, Photographer
Pasadena / Fullerton | Ca | USA | Posted: 9:31 PM on 04.15.09
->> I am curious who will be applying for Eddie Adams Workshop. The dead line is coming up soon, less than a month now by May 11th 2009. Dates for this year are October 9-12.

http://www.eddieadamsworkshop.com/apply/

I know several SS members have graced the roll sheet for EAW. I also interested for any insight on maximizing my submission. I have seen variety of portfolios from straight journalism to something completely else. Another item I found interesting was that captions are not needed at all.

"We no longer accept captions, so your images should be strong enough visually to not require them. "

Any input of comments are welcome on or off the forum. I will be working on my submission over the spring break while most will be partying. I am still recovering from SSA VI but this last month has been nothing less than awesome.

Cheers !

->> My best advice for anyone applying is to show your personal vision. Show nothing but your best, most personal images, in the way you see the world. If you question a photo in your portfolio, you probably should leave it out.

As for content, what to submit, my team had it all. A single story, three images, a general portfolio, portraits, etc. Just put in what your heart tells you. Afterward, click submit and don't worry about it until they announce the students accepted.

Good luck to all. It really is one helluva rollercoaster ride and a wonderful experience that will always stay with you.

Also pay just as much attention to your written essay as you do your images.

Best of luck to all that apply. The EAW is truly amazing!! Get your sleep now :-)

->> Patrick,

Are you saying that someone in your team was accepted based off of 3 images?

I will be applying and have been struggling as to which collection of images to submit.

I have a story I just completed that contains ~18 images.

I also have a collection of 5-6 photos that are not at all connected, but I think best answer the question: "How do you see the world?"

So, both portfolios have their strengths, but I'm a bit worried that submitting only 6 images might be insufficient.

If any of you think differently, then please let me know!

Also, if any EAW alum are bored and feel like looking over the two portfolios I am stuck between, send me a message and I will send you a link.

Thanks!

->> Patrick's advice is really solid, the only thing I would add is that as a photographer it is extremely important to have a mentor. Find someone that you really trust and whose vision you really admire, and ask them to help you edit a portfolio. My mentor edited my portfolio for EAW XX and without him and his help I doubt I would have gotten in.

A great mentor will be able to take the 18 images that you really like and turn them into 6-8 picture edit that will be much stronger and have a much better chance of helping you get into the workshop.

It's not that I don't think you can get some great feedback by asking people on sportsshooter to take a look at your work, but a relationship with a mentor will be much, much more valuable in terms of your photographic growth and your EAW application.

Good luck to everyone who is applying -

Chris Jordan

So it's not so much a question of editing the story down, it's a question as to what the admissions judges at EAW might favor.

I'm sure they see zillions of stories, so I'm leaning toward a tight collection of unrelated images that I would categorize as "personal vision".

One big change from last year's application. A letter of recommendation is no longer necessary.

Unlike last year, it does not seem like they will be extending the deadline. If you are interested in applying deadline is real soon.

I for one is always pleased to have roster padded with several Sportsshooter members.

Good luck to all !

I know on the site, it says they no longer accept captions, and that the images should be good enough to have no caption.

But when you are about to upload a image there is a box for a caption and title. I am just making sure nobody else is putting anything in those boxes.

Thanks, Josh

The captions simply were not being referenced in the stages of judging. The workshop wasn't designed to teach you photojournalism -- that's what you learn in school and on the job. The workshop provides attendees with an intense experience to interact with your peers and with the top people in the business. Hopefully, you come away from the workshop feeling incredibly inspired, and hopefully you'll also establish relationships with others that will carry you through the course of your career.

->> Bradly,

Im sure there are many reasons, but this is what ive heard...

They get so many applications from all over the world, its an impossible task for the people donating their time to read through EVERY single caption on every photo. thats 20x however many applicants and thats a ton of copy.

Another reason is that your image should stand on its own without a caption.

As far as teaching photojournalism I dont think that is entirely true. They teach photography of all kinds, theyve had straight up art photographers, portrait photographers, etc attend the workshop. many of the staff and faculty have a background in PJ, but I dont think the workshop is ONLY photojournalism based.

I include captions with the hope that my photo is interesting enough for someone to *want* to read the story it represents. But I absolutely agree the images should have to stand on their own in that regard.

Now that the deadline has passed, would folks be interested in showing their hands as far as what images the judges will be looking at?

I hope to see you all there.

->> Allen-

Perhaps the workshop has evolved since I attended almost 9 years ago, and maybe that is why they no longer accept captions, which is fine.

Back then it WAS a photojournalism workshop. There were 100 students, and all of them were assigned a photo story. Not fashion, not landscapes, not abstracts, a photo story. The staff and speakers were pretty much all photojournalists, and showed work of photojournalism. Not fashion or commercial photographers, photojournalists. As students, we were to abide by the rules and ethics of photojournalism when shooting. During the portfolio reviews my captions were critiqued as well.

And, on the "day one" Web page of the Barnstorm XIII workshop's website that I have a screen grab of (because it had a picture of me on it, holding an F5 - holy crap I'm dating myself), it says:

"All 100 students and all of the faculty arrived safely in Jeffersonville, NY, ready to shoot, learn, teach, grow, and experience one of the most intense and unique weekends of photojournalism there is."

So maybe the workshop has evolved to include other parts of photography, which is great. I'm glad the workshop is branching out and expanding to include other aspects of photography. But I do have to object to something Todd said, that, "...your image should stand on its own without a caption."

In photojournalism at least, this is a near impossibility. I can't think of one image out there, in the photojournalism world, that is so good that it wasn't made better without a well-written caption.

Oftentimes when I'm looking through portfolios for our internship, what separates the field at the top of the pile isn't the quality of the photos, but the attention to detail in their captions.

->> Well.

I didn't get into SportsShooter on my first try either -- looks like I will be taking a few lessons from that experience as I grow and apply to next year's EAW once more.

I know many EAW alumni were rejected their first time applying, and they took the initiative and got better and were rewarded the second time they applied.

Although it is harsh seeing that dejected email in your inbox, don't let it discourage you...take the next 365 to improve your craft, and to look for new stories and new opportunities in new places. Find your vision and let next years portfolio be only -your- photos. Edit tightly. Find friends to help you edit tightly. And most importantly, keep on shooting.

Hoping to see NYC in the Fall next year,

Daniel

I didn't apply this year as I had a prior commitment (as if I would have gotten in anyway, haha) and money is tight but I can remember last year's rejection and it was awful! Probably one of my lowest points professionally but many good photographers in the business, some whom never got in, told me it was not the end of the world and life goes on.

I don't let stuff like this bother me anymore; probably because I have a girlfriend now and I don't let photo define me. Having met you Daniel and Rafael, I admire your attitude and resolve. Having seen your work, you'll most than likely get in soon.

Cheers to all my friends, colleagues and fellow students that made it. It's not a easy process.
