Anybody use the NPPA medical plans?

->> Have any of you been on or currently are on the NPPA medical plans?

I have the option of paying an arm in a leg for Cobra or look into the NPPA medical plans if they offer medical in Washington State. Just thought I would get your thoughts on these.

->> If you just got on Cobra, you should check with the new laws Obama pushed through, in many cases, the company that provided you health insurance has to front a chunk of Cobra for a certain amount of time before you have to pay it full. I would check.

->> Try contacting your state's Farm Bureau. They have non-farmer memberships that run about $50 a year and then you have access to some pretty decent health insurance options. I'm sure it varies state-to-state, but it might be worth looking into.

When I left newspapers last year, I did without having an increase in my insurance premiums.

->> The new Cobra rule is that your former employer has to pay 65% of the premium for 9 months, which the government gives them a tax break for, then it goes up to the full amount to you. In my wife's case this meant coverage for a lot less than we could farm it out for the first 9 months.

->> In order to get the Cobra subsidy your employment would have to be involuntarily terminated September 1, 2008 or after. There is also an individual modified gross income limit of $125,000.

If you are healthy you should be able to find a reasonable medical plan through an independent broker in your area. Most associations don't really have a discount for the medical plan...they just provide the service.

If you can't qualify for an individual medical plan then Cobra is your best option because you may be eligible for a guaranteed issued plan through HIPAA after exhausting Cobra.
