->> Bad day for baseball legends today. First the news of Harry Kalas and then this:

The Bird was one of the most colorful baseball stories of the Bicentennial.

I can still remember him getting on his hands and knees and dusting off the pitching mound and sticking his face in his glove before a pitch and talking to the ball. Also that great SI cover with Fidrych and Big Bird. What a shame, he will be missed.

->> Ah man, another great baseball name goes down at too young an age. (is there ever a "right" age?)

Just this past weekend I watched the 1976 complete game on MLB TV against the Yankees.

They always say these things come in 3's, right? Let's hope this is the end; Nick, Harry and now The Bird.

Rest in Peace!

->> Hmm, for some crazy reason, I'd thought he'd already passed away some years back.

One of the first games (might have been THE first) I ever went to at Yankee Stadium was in '76, and he was the starting pitcher for the Tigers. Couldn't really see him talking to the ball from where we were sitting, but we did see him stroking the mound during pre-game warmups.

He sure was the phenom back in the day. R.I.P. Mark.
