Need Advice Please
Thomas Marshall, Photographer

->> I am going to be shooting a car race, motor sport, in the end of May.

I will be getting an all access pass from an internet company I am shooting for, in return for the pass, they get any dibs on any image they want.

I am able to find other revenue streams without conflict as well.

I am located in Los Angeles, CA and have no clue on how to sell myself, or the images to a magazine, paper, agency, whatever.

Any advice will greatly be appreciated.

Thanks.

->> Thomas, just look for a really long line of guys with cameras hanging off their shoulders... you should be close by then. Actually try agencies. Good luck because that's where the true lines are.

->> My best advice to you is to figure out how to do the second part before you do the first part.

Contact the Agencies and the car magazines and see what their rates are and if they would be agreeable to you submitting photos. Since you have no experience at this, I'd suggest having some solid work to show them.

I don't know what race you are shooting, or what you are expecting to produce from it, but make sure you know what rights you are granting the people who are credentialing you. And make sure it's worth your time and effort to do this.

->> Thanks for the advice.

I do have some work to show in my portfolio, but it is baseball, football and soccer from the highschool level to the youth level. Action mostly, not any formal team or individual stuff.

I have visited the venue where the race is being held at, and have an idea where I want to shoot.

My question now is...I know about ALL PRO SPORTS agency here in LA, but can not find them.

How do I find them?

->> Thomas, am I ready your original post correct in that you will be supplying photos to the internet company in exchange for access only?

Something to be aware of is the limitations placed on credentials at some events. You don't say what type of race you're planning on shooting, but I know NASCASR has, in the past, had a clause in the credential wording that limited use to only the company that the credential was issued.

In other words if the race organizer issued a credential to you through a company named XYZ.com, your photos can only appear on XYZ.com. You wouldn't be allowed to license them to other news outlets.

->> I will ask more questions per the recent posts.

I will look at the guide and the link. I have looked in the yellow pages, and got lost.

Thank you.
