->> Ok I have a problem that has me confused. I burned 20 DVDs with basically the past 4 years of my best work on DVD's using an E-machine with Windows Vista Basic operating system.
When I stick the burned DVD's into my Mac power book G4 with the Mac OS X 10.4.11 operating system the DVDS open up the DVD burning program toast and want me to start burning. The powerbook can't even find the DVD it's like sticking a empty DVD into the DVD drive.
Know these DVDs have the images stored on them because I can open them just fine on the e-machine, but the Mac isn't finding them. Is this because Windows Vista is too advanced for mac OS X 10.4.11? |

->> First, you don't mention which PowerBook you have. If the disc is a DVD RW, it may be too dense for the DVD drive to read. Full sized drives have much more powerful lasers and can "gain up" for RW discs. You may also want to try cleaning the laser in the PowerBook. There are plenty of kits at the local computer store. Some are specifically to clean slot loading discs like the one on your PowerBook. These are usually CD discs with brushes on them.
If you have an external USB or Firewire DVD drive, try that. I read in a forum that you might try repairing permissions using the Apple Disk Utility.
The other problem may be that you have burned the disc in an incompatible format. Double check your settings for your DVD burning software on your PC to be sure you haven't been burning in a PC specific format. In the past, early SuperDrives would read and write only DVD-R/RW discs.
If the images are not in folders, understand that the disc may take awhile to show up at all. Your PowerBook has to make thumbnails of all the images before it will show up! To avoid that in the future, be sure to put the images in a folder, then onto the disc. You might have to wait ten minutes or more for the photos to show up. Listen to see if it sounds like the disc is reading.

If you can re-burn the discs, try that or see if you can get a new external DVD burner for your PowerBook. They come in handy AND you can read and burn at much higher speeds. It can also move with you to your new computer. I don't know if Leopard may help this situation, but if you are not planning on buying a new Mac, you might want to consider it. The Finder was greatly improved- and it doesn't have the same problems with thumbs on DVD data discs. |

->> The DVD's are DVD+R 16X. I have a Titanium Powerbook G4 with the Mac OS X 10.4.11 operating system.
I tried the DVD / CD cleaner. When I load a DVD that was burned on any other computer it loads right to the desktop and I see the DVD on my desk top with the files. But the DVD's burned on the e-machine when I place one of those into my powerbook it automatically opens up the Toast CD / DVD burning software and asks me if I want to burn files.
I am able to download the DVDs to the e-machine and drag files onto a lexar jumpdrive and slowly transfer then over to the mac but thats a very slow process. |

| ->> Okay, that PowerBook cannot read 16X discs- period. You need to buy 8x DVD-R discs. Use an external Firewire DVD drive on the PowerBook or use an external Firewire hard drive to transfer files. That computer is over 5 years old and 16X discs were not even available, it has USB 1.0 as well so use Firewire drives. Remember- Use only Minus discs and 8x speed or lower. |

->> Hum, odd I have been using 16X DVDs on here for the past year and never had this problem until I used the e-machine to burn files. So I am guessing that the e-machine burned the files as 16X while this powerbook burns them at 8X or lower.
Here are the specs on the mac
Machine Name: PowerBook G4 15"
Machine Model: PowerBook5,4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.5 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.8.4f1
So in conclusion this machine burns slow and low while the e-machine burns fast and this is why I can't read the files. |

| ->> I also just purchased one of those external drives you suggested. This will really help out in the future. |

->> Okay your computer is not the Titanium, but the Aluminum PowerBook- big difference. Different drives like different discs. Burn at lower speeds and experiment with different types. Buy in small packs of 5 until you find a brand that works reliably in your Mac. Also, your PowerBook does have USB 2.0. Go to Costco and get a USB/FireWire hard drive for $80. Leave it formatted as a PC disc to read and write on both computers.
Try the SMC reset mentioned in the earlier Apple Support doc. |

| ->> I have been able to burn 16X dvds on the mac no problem for some time. I am guessing it's burning them at a slower speed though. I am just finding out it's not reading anything burned 16X from another computer. |

->> In Roxio Toast there is an option to create a "... Data disc readable by any Mac or PC" There is also an option to create ones only readable by a Mac (I am on Mac) so I would guess there is a similar setting for PCs on Windows based computers using Toast.
I seem to recall that the Mac + PC wasn't the default setting.
I don't see mention of which software you used to burn the DVDs on the PC but suspect they all have similar settings so it may be worth checking if you have been creating PC only readable discs. |

->> Another suggestion would be to try some different media... not just necessarily slower than 16X, but try a different brand. There can be a lot of 'sketchiness' between different makes and models of burners (and firmware versions of those burners), and different types/brands of media.
