Time lapse and audio

->> I'm working on a couple time lapses for the first time and in looking around for other movies to look at, I've haven't found many that have audio to them. Particularly audio that's ambient stuff from whatever the subject is.

I'm trying to decide if I want to add ambient sound to the ones I'm working on but the pacing is obvious different than the pacing for a typical soundslide. I suppose I could record an hour of audio, compress it to match the 45 seconds of the movie. That might sound like playing the Beatles White Album backwards tho. If anyone has some examples of time lapses with sound to them I'd appreciate a link, thanks.

I would only run audio at real time or maybe 2x speed but you are right, it will sound really odd sped up to match the time lapse. Try to find audio that is representative of the situation. Also try to find interesting audio. Most pieces I see these days have really boring audio.

->> Part of the problem with speeding up audio is that it increases the pitch of the sounds that are produced. It is possible to speed up the audio and while decreasing the pitch to its original level using a pitch shifter (rack mounted pro audio gear or a software plug in).

Even with the pitch returned to normal, ambient sounds at high speed are going to make for chaotic and unpleasant listening.

I wouldn't recommend speeding up the audio to match the pace of the time-lapse. The perceived speed and the actual speed of the time-lapse are different and you need to be aware of that. The best thing to do is find natural sound that matches your project — both speed and content.
